Top 5 Games Played in the Last Year
I'm looking for some new entertainment. Doesn't matter how old they are, just what you have gained the most enjoyment from in the last year.
For me, in no particular order:
1) Close Combat II and V - a WWII RTS game
Being in Spain with only a pair of laptops with 4 and 8Mb graphics cards limited my gamesplaying this year, but the CC series managed to keep me in the house and away from all those smelly spaniards with their gay marriages and terrorist bombs. Plenty of support and mods available to keep the game interesting (here). Been playing this series since '97, probably ranks in my top 5 all time favourites.
2) Homeworld 1 and 2 - Space RTS.
I'll count these as one game as the premise and gameplay are the same. As above, because of my limited access to a decent computer, Homeworld 1 occupied a decent portion of my gaming time while in Spain. As soon as I got to a real computer I picked up Homeworld 2 to continue my addiction. When Homeworld 1 came out in 1999, it was a landmark in Space based RTS, and nothing has come out since then to challenge it. Again the system is well supported with mods and add-ons and there remains a large community out there for online gaming.
3) Neverwinter Nights (+ SoU and HotU) - D&D RPG nerdfest
Poured more than a few hours into this game. Good Lord I am a nerd.
4) Medieval Total War - Empire Building + RTS spankage
Leaving the great Shogun TW in the dust. I picked this up only a month ago and took enourmous delight in crushing eurasia under my boot. Killing the French has never been so fun. Can't wait to pick up Rome TW.
5) X2 - The Threat - Open ended epic Space Sim
If any game is a worthy successor to the legendary Elite, this is it. I have probably poured more hours into this game than any other. From building up my trading empire to fending off the alien invasions, constructing a fleet to battling pirates in my own fighter, this game has kept me immersed throughout. Certainly got my moneys worth here.
I guess my runners up would be WH40K, Dawn of War and Knights of the Old Republic (even though it was in spanish and I had to play with a spanish dictionary in my lap).
Most overhyped: Deux Ex 2. It sucked. Moved into my coaster collection.
