You could save a lot of time and money by just downloading the demo.

But then you would waste so much time playing them. With just the demos, you're guaranteed to waste 1/10 of the time you would with the full versions.

If the army distributed free first person shooters to aspiring young soldiers, that wouldn't be a waste of time. Otherwise, I would tend to disagree.

Half-Life 2: November 1
Football Manager 2005: November 5
Middle-Earth: November 19
Quake IV: December 31

Football Manager will take up most of my gaming time.

Half-Life 2 is a dead cert buy.

..fuck it, i'll buy the lot.

there is a good chance that halflife 2 will eb out before the end of the year, but don't count on it. because Vivendi Universal Games (the publisher) doesn't like the idea that valve software is going to sell the game online, ie: thus cutting out the publisher. legal problems are on the horizon =\

but oddly enough PC gamer UK has reviewd the game and they gave it 96%, which doesn't mean anything, they reviewed counter strike: condition zero several months before it was released. the game might be out next week or late january. so don't believe any release dates you hear

please keep in mind that these screenshots are from an early build of the game

bought rome total war today.

installed it. then selected play. monitor switched itself off. interesting.

reboot. double clicked again on icon. windows crashed.

downloaded new graphics drivers (for my radeon 9700 pro) and also installed the patch for the game.

i've only got a athlon 2.4, though i have a nice gig of ram.

the game runs smooooooooooooooth as fuck. really impressed. fucking beautiful graphics.

also, very happy that they improved the general gameplay with regards to empire building.

maybe goatboy can shed some light.....

the forum geeks at total war forums, are really getting stuck into Rome.

they reckon the AI is shit. the game is full of bugs. have the people cant get it work......etc etc

thoughts?

so far, i thinks its a wonderful gaming experience.

The few problems I have had with crappy AI so far have been when I have AI controlled allied troops on the field. I've found it better to not go onto the battle map when that happens. AI is mindless.

When the AI is playing the enemy its pretty smart. Enemy trrops react to your movements and play to any terrain adavantages.

Money management on huge cities 24k+ populations is hard. Don't make the same mistake I made where I had most of my troops coming from a couple of cities (cities with all the production in place to build the cool units). Unit funding comes from the city they were produced in, and I now have a couple of cities that are haemorraging money. This added to general unhappiness in the populace means you are constantly running the knife edge of open rebellion.

I'm about 100 years (~200 turns) into my campaign playing the Scipii (I settled on medium difficulty), and have about 25 provinces. Each province I get increases the time it takes to make a turn. With battles, 1 turn is taking me about 40 minutes or so.

I need to take a break from this game, been playing it non-stop all week.

Finished it on the long campaign setting (at 199 BC). Now I'll try it on a harder setting with the Greeks.

Love this game.
