"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel
I suspect I may be the very last person to read this multiple award winner.
In the odd event that some of you haven't done so yet, for the love of God, get to a bookstore TOMORROW and pick it up. Particularly if you're a fan of the content (as opposed to the style) of Shylaman movies.
Certainly one of the best books in years.

You definitely won't be the last because it's on my mental list and I shall be reading it soon. I can't wait because my girlfriend recommended it to me and I had read some great reviews when it came out. I was told that the beginning was slow, though.

After a day's sober reflection....no need to rush out and buy it tomorrow, but still a damn impressive read with a hell of a visceral impact at the end.

Heh, comparing it to a Shalalamamnalan movie is funny to me. Because they both share the common thread of being overrated pieces of crap. Well, actually I'm not sure about Life of Pi. I heard some amazing things, read fifty pages and gave it away to a fat Jewish girl in Interlaken, Switzerland. After hearing what GFY says about the slow start, maybe I made too hasty a decision... but oh well. I have actually sat through M. Night's movies (excluding the Village, haven't gotten around to it yet), they are--without out a doubt--excrutiatingly pathetic.

If you insist on watching it I recommend drinking before. And during. And after. For the pain.

Don't watch the Village.
And no, I haven't read it either, but I saw it at the used bookstore I frequent, and as I have nigh unto $20 in credit left there, plus another box of useless drivel to trade in, I'll probably snag it this weekend.

it's been recommended to me, but not until after i was told that it was blatantly ripped off from a section of brazilian author moacyr scliar's 'max and the cats'. though in looking things up just now i have seen people say that mr martel said that the differences when put side-by-side are significant, and that the original bit in the older novel is only 16 pages long, but he also said "Why put up with a brilliant premise ruined by a lesser writer?" when scliar is one of brazil's most respected authors.
my roommate apparently took a class on the booker prize and how shit it is. i was biased from the start, but when i read the first chapter i didn't like how martel wrote at all so i combined that with my distaste for the situation and put life of pi down, never to pick it up again.

So much for making it a special moment.

I liked it. Still chewing on it, in fact. I've read Adrift by Callahan, who's tale of survival is referenced as well, and likened it to that. That's recommended too.
