The "What metal are you listening to?" thred...

so lately i've had a bit of a metal craving, and i' ve been looking for some good metal, going through the old "what are you listening to" threads, downloading alot of shit, mostly disappointing as far as metal goes.

So, I want this thread to promote GOOD heavy/death/black metal, and I emphasize GOOD because so much is CRAP grumbling bullshit that nobody can understand (cannibal corpse, napalm death, etc). Iunderstand that this is purely opinion, and you may be a big cannibal corpse fanatic, but what i'm looking for is songs that have managed to sacrifice some growl for rythm, melody and rhyme.

To start off the thread, I found this song purely by accident while searching for a song by "The Darkness" (don't ask) It definately hit me right off the bat as a keeper. (Yeah they maybe poplular already, but i'm really out of the loop, which is all the more reason to have this thread).

Anyway, the song is:

Kitty - Into the Darkness

My review: after the first time I heard it, i had to listen to it 3 or 4 more times and counting, and my conclusion is that this is probably already a popular death metal song which pisses off the "true" hardcores because it strays too far, which is really not that far, and is why very few people listen to the "true" death & black metal. Also, I'm pretty sure the singer is a female, although I can't really be certain, but it's pretty freakin admirable if a chick can put out shit like this.

It is really heavy, but melodic, there's a tune there, there's more to it than verse after verse of heavy growls and screams, although they're there, just strategically placed.

Download the song, a solid A from me, probably the perfect mix for my personal tastes, and it's really the type of stuff I want to find. Going to find some more of their stuff.

Hit up a band called "Strapping Young Lad". Hawley tricked me into d/ling them, but they're metal to my taste. Try "Detox" or "AAA" for good starter songs.

Strapping Young Lad - City < -- its their best album in my opinion, and im not alone on that. not that their other albums aren't worth checking out

Hollenthon - With Vilest Of Worms To Dwell < -- pretty EPIC stuff, this is the kind of metal that makes you think about conan the barbarian marching to war. pretty kick ass

Dimmu borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, Puritanical euphoric misanthro < -- two of their best albums, if youre going to get dimmu borgir, those are the album i would buy

Amon Amarth < -- this band is pretty good, kinda hard to understand the singer sometimes but the music one the whole is pretty good, no idea what albums they have made ive only got singles.

Dark harvest - Sunny Valentino.mp3 < -- i know one of the guys in this band, pretty good instrumental, its the only song i have

if you want to talk about these bands/albums/songs in further detail ... just PM me or something

here are the Strapping Young Lad songs I could find:

Strapping Young Lad - Rape Song:
A little too screamy for me, but overall better than average

Strapping Young Lad - Satans Ice Cream Truck:
kinda cool, transition from very light comedic circus rock straight to death growl. neat, but not something i'd listen to.

Strapping Young Lad - Home Nucleonics:
Extremely heavy, some very Pantera like screams (which is good), actually I think most of the song, the last minute at least, is Pantera verbose, i'm sure of it. It's like Pantera Extreme. Rock.

Strapping Young Lad - Relentless:
Ok, a nice, heavy background song, but nothing i'd play explicitlyl.

Strapping Yong Lad - Detox:
At first I thought I really liked this song, but the lyrics ruined it (or complete lack of)

Strapping Yonug Lad - Oh My Fucking God:
excilint

Strapping Yong Lad - AAA
i like this song alot

Also, I could only find one other Kitty song, "Brackish", and yes it definately is a chick which really amazes me that a chick can do what she does, brackish is a very good song. Check out this band, seriously.

I saw them do Rotten Cocksuckers Ball live last week. It was pretty funny. They did it as part of "My Favorite Record", a song they do where they break into various songs in the middle of the song ("My favorite record's got...."). It was awesome.

My musical tastes run pretty broadly, really. There's not much by way of genre I don't like (most contemporary R&B I find unlistenable, but that's about it), and my regular playlist is pretty famously all over the place (last three songs, for instance, were Bill Monroe - Rocky Top, Cee-Lo - I'll Be Around, and currently Charles Trenet - Que reste-t-il de nous amours). I'm not a metal guy per se, but when I catch something I dig I check it out (as with Strapping Young Lad).

p.s. if you don't already have it, get Ministry - Hero. Came on the shuffle as I was writing.

Nice thread. Agree with Hawley on Dimmu, but my favorite keyboard BM band is Limbonic Art.

Absu - Tara. I FINALLY got it and it rules everything. Black/Thrash with lots of neat tricks. If you like their drummer, he plays in Melechesh too. Get 'Sphynx' by them.

Mastodon - Leviathan. A bit more mainstream but pure class. Dl 'Blood and Thunder', you'll be convinced.

Opeth - Anything, perhaps Blackwater Park. Melodic death and much more. Probably the best band in the world.

Edit: Oops, just realized your growl veto. Well, including BM grunting that only leaves Mastodon and about 50% Opeth.

Welcome to 1998.

Some metal bands I'm aware of:

*degrees of "metal" may vary*

Slipknot
Iced Earth
Type O Negative
Five Pointe O
Il Nino
Coal Chamber
Fear Factory
Kitty

Fuck. It's all I can think of at the moment, which is odd considering I used to listen to almost exclusively metal of some sort in high school.

if you get into dimmu borgir may i suggest emperor? anthems to the welkin at dusk and prometheus i think are some of their best works. if emperors a bit too much then try pecattum one of the singers side projects- a bit more operatic with his wife doing vocals with him. good for listening to in the bath with a bottle of red. another band he is involved with is darkthrone, a bit more lo fi

Some good melodic bands

entombed ONE OF THE BEST DEATH METAL BANDS EVER. their early stuff was amazing (clandestine, left hand path, wolverine blues) then they started sounding like a pink floyd covers band but have two other great albums hollowman and inferno.
the haunted
opeth - my arms your hearse
soilwork
at the gates (similar to amon amarth)
amorphis
arkangel
archenemy (their later albums have an amazing female vocalist)
centinex
carnal forge
abc diablo
the third and the mortal
in flames
dream theater (dunno about metal but amazing musicianship)
dew scented
high on fire
hate eternal
meshuggah (weird rhythms and beats)

if any of the preceding bands were too heavy for you I suggest you dont progress any further.

heavier less melodic stuff
lamb of god
skitsystem (incredibly powerful crushing swedish thrash you must listen to this, doesnt matter that you cant understand their vocals because its all swedish anyway)
nile (egyptian influenced, amazing composition)
morbid angel
dying fetus
misery index (dying fetus side project)
mayhem
marduk
death
burzum (filosofem is blackmetal the rest of his stuff is mostly dark atmospheric ambience)
bolt thrower
carcass (albums become more melodic over time)
daughters
birdflesh

insane bands (heaviest fastest most crazed bands ever)
phobia
psycroptic
regurgitate
disgorge
soilent green
necrophagist - growl vox with killer shredding guitars
origin - has, along with brutal truth, some of the fastest drumming ever
brutal truth - i suggest extreme conditions demand extreme measures, their first and best album. download regression/progression, denial of existence, walking corpse, and stench of the profit. ecde was the only album this drummer played on (he joined exit 13 if you want to hear more of his beats). need to control is their next best album, the drumming isnt as fast but the patterns are a lot more complex, and as a result so are the song structures.
cephalic carnage
terrorizer
circle of dead children

agoraphobic nosebleed

if you got some mastodon and enjoyed it then try checking out isis, old man gloom, 5ive (not the boy band, get the album The Telestic Disfracture it is mind warping), khanate, brainoil, artimus pyle

that should keep you busy for a while:

Is there some special rock that you crawl out from under when this subject comes up?

BTW, I had never made the connection before, but is your handle from the band of the same name (Gorilla Biscuits)? NYC punk band? If so, the bass player is a friend of mine. I had never heard of them, but I remembered your handle.

BTW, dingle you'll find more results if you search for Kittie. That's how they spell it. I photographed them once. They were really young and canadian. i think they also do a pink floyd cover.

I concur with some of the stuff listed and some not listed. My personal suggestions below, ranging from the melodies and speed of black metal to more catchy metal.

Meshuggah
Opeth
Lamb of God (deal with the screaming, they fucking rule)
Cryptopsy
In Flames (new stuff sucks, though)
At the Gates
Emperor
Machine Head (first two albums)
Fear Factory (some is good, some sucks)
Type O Negative

This is also assuming you already know the mainstream essentials by Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Slayer, etc.

Some avant-garde stuff. Means open your mind and listen to it a lot.

Arcturus - Le Masquerade Infernale. Operatic dark metal with genius touches.

Kovenant - Nexus Polaris. Sci-fi dark metal. One of my all time faves.

Ulver - William Blake's The Marriage Between Heaven and Hell. Yes, the entire work set to dreamy electronic/metal compositions.

Therion - Theli. Heavy metal + Carl Off. Accessible and addicting.

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness. One 60 min song with all kinds of great themes.

Edge of Sanity - Crimson. Another one-song album, filled with deathy goodness.

Napalm Death
Cannibal Corpse

Strapping Young Lad is one of the bands Devin Townsend plays and tours with. Townsend is a real musical genius and he's also one very strange mother fucker, he was one of Steve Vai's pet projects when he was still a kid. His solo project called "Ocean Machine" is great, find a song called "Hide Nowhere" its awesome stuff.

Find some classic stuff like Seahags, Biohazard, Nuclear Assault. Go even further back and get Motorhead's Ace of Spades, that always fills my urge for metal pretty well. And no one's really done it better since.

Oh and some King Diamond and Mercyful Fate as well.

Funny you should mention Motorhead. This band always puts me in mind of em for some reason. I think it's that the vocalist sounds kinda like Lemmy, but there's somethin else about em as well.

Oh, and when I said the old stuff, I meant the Sabbath, not the Anti-Cimex.

I also love Amebix and Man Is The Bastard, though I wouldn't call that metal, really. MITB is pretty insane, however.

Corrupted! A Japanese band that does their songs in Spanish for some reason. Incredibly slow sludgy doomcore soundin shit.

Sleep's Holy Mountain is good, if you like rehashed Sabbath soundin stuff, which I do, actually. Dead Meadow gets the same kind of groove to their music, I think.

I love metal up yer ass.
