art school

after 3 semesters of college i decided to switch my major to fine arts. i was first an architecture major, then a technical communication major, now fine arts with concentration on graphic design. i've done graphic design as a hobby for almost 4 years now, and i can't think of anything i'd rather do for a living.

anyway, i had taken generic art classes before, many years ago, but i was never really into it until just recently.

so i'm in my second semester as an art student now, and really loving it.
anyway, here's some of the (academic) work that i've done for these two semesters:

FIRST SEMESTER

this is my first real still life that i ever drew. graphite. 18"x24"

my first time ever using charcoal pencils. 18"x24"

here's a process shot of that yarn. it took like a week of classes to finish it.

my first portrait (although it's obviously drawn from a photograph). graphite, 18"x24"

the model's face is all weird in this one because i had to do that part at home. it was supposed to be a 2 day assignment, but the model was sick the 2nd day, so we were kinda screwed, and had to finish it from our heads.
18"x24" conte (sanguine and sepia) and charcoal

textures assignment - had to texture a black and white photograph with flat and stylized textures.
14"x14", ink

SECOND SEMESTER

18"x24", graphite. line only - no blending

18"x24", graphite. combination of line and blending, depending on texture

18"x24", charcoal
just turned this one in today.
just noticed that my flash kinda faded away the details at the bottom though, but it's really a good bit darker.

anyway, i know a lot of you guys draw and paint too, so let's see some of your work!

Not bad, Avondale, but I hope you can eat drawn food.

The last two are much improved over the first ones. Fabric folds are a bitch.

yeah, i've worked with nude models several times. it's not that great. it isn't particularly a turn on or anything, because you don't really get a chance to think about it when you're drawing her.
i worked with a nude model today too. she was an overweight black woman.

i did the face last because faces, hands, and feet are usually the last things you draw.
details come last. you map out the shapes and the proportions first, then go back and do the shading and fine details

Pretty good stuff man.

As for starving artists, if you get a job in advertising you make more than the average person, that's for sure. A heckuva lot more.

well, advertising and packaging is where my major will direct me most likely. we have a heavy emphasis on corporate design.

i want to do cd covers and book covers though i've already done 3 cd covers that i've sold to record labels.

true dat, concentrate on digital mediums - flash, illustrator, photoshop, imageready, freehand, fireworks, etc. or 3d graphics - 3dstudiomax, lightwave, etc. Nobody makes money painting, the money is in computer graphics or CAD.

that's my plan, dingle!
although i will have to learn to paint as part of my major. i can't paint at all yet. well, i sort of can with acrylic, but i've never even used oils yet.

since it's going to take a long time to complete my graphic design concentration, i'm still going to take extra drawing and painting classes, most likely, because it's something i've always wanted to do, and this is probably going to be my only opportunity to ever do it.

Aren't they all supposed to be shapely. That's the point of form, right? The shapelier the human, the more subtle the lines. It's easy to draw a rail.

well, yeah, they often go for more curvey female models, and more muscular male models.
but they try to go for a wide variety of body shapes as well. they get some skinny, some huge, etc.
