Thinking in terms of general forum policy, with free speech and as liberal as the law allows policies for banning, I was wondering how many other forums or communities offer the same thing? It seems on the one hand that there must be many many, but then on the other it seems that almost every place has some restrictive content policies or moderation or some owner who just can't take users who take potshots and bans them, etc.

What's your take, perhaps based on your experience with other sites? Are we an outlier or more common that it may appear? I don't know of any other forums that give users this much freedom, but I've got an admittedly small sample to work from.

Mord, where was that?

Of course any board is only as good as its membership. Our members post at THT, Forbidden Compounds (I think that is the name), and maybe some other similar-ish places. I don't know about their actual policies or enforcement of them.

While we are on topic, what is our policy about violating personal trust here? Say someone spills dirty secrets about people, posts private email or messages, or reveals true identities? I'm not suggesting I'm about to do that at all, just wondering how we deal with it. Because that could be one area that isn't illegal but isn't allowed here.

Yeah, I love this place for the best and worst it brings out in us.

Ambient Noize or something like that, I found it in Snarkychicks profile.

Not suprisingly, it was a spin-off, like this place, fleeing censorship, like this place.

Suprisingly, it was from some forum about reality television shows.

And they really didn't want free speech, as I think it was Rokkr said to me, "It's a bunch of middle-aged, normal, average people who like to think they are naughty and edgy by having a place where they can say 'fuck' or 'shit' occasionally. Or something to that effect.

He was pretty much dead on, as there were calls for my banning as soon as I showed up.

I recall one moment that highlighted things for me, there was a thread, something about how people on the forum they'd spun off from were talking shit about somethings said at Ambient, namely some mild blasphemy, and some thread where someone had suggested ways for people to succesfully commit suicide. As it was, the thread was full of these folks dancing around parading their 'edginess' about how they could say whatever they wanted.

I chimed in with something about 'hating niggers' in true hawley style, and things got kinda quiet and ugly, and well, they pretty much missed the entire irony that I was pointing out.

Wait, that happens here too.

Nevermind.

We can post Private Messages, but its not wrong. Just filed under bad taste from my experience. I doubt this site is unique, just to us. a welcome respite from what we've known

Mord's right. There are varying gradations of what people consider "free speech" boards. I've seen more than one board spin off another one because some of the members felt "censored".

Then eventually, as at Ambient Noize, they find their own brand of censorship.
I generally like this place because despite the occasional person who takes stuff to heart too seriously, a good portion of the people here don't get too damned upset about most anything.

Aside from their politics that is.

I haven’t managed to get banned from here yet, tried to ban myself a few times but I always came back like a ho to her pimp.


I regret that I can’t tell people that there is little censorship here at the asylum anymore when i invite them. kiddie porn and rabid spamming used to be the only thing i had to say we censored, but alas. That used to be the coolest thing about this forum (that's why we left stile rememeber?), now we have the PDM bullshit and the private messaging thing I guess.

still the best site though and some of its members have grown on me like a horrible fungus. make it stop.

last place i got banned from was ogrish, and they show beheading videos and murder scenes and shit. I got banned for having to tell some pig fucker they were a pig fucker and didnt do it in the one designated forum they have for flaming. atleast we just have one forum you cant call someone a pig fucker in. you fucking pig fuckers. *lurve*
