Advice re new car

I fear my trusty Mazda 323 is struggling - it's 12 years old and has been racing its engine and finding inclines difficult.
It may be time.
I am looking at a Renault Megane only because I'm incredibly taken by the hatch. A Ford Focus is also in the picture.
Does anyone have any experience of either?
(NB We don't have American models here - only Asian and European.) I want over a 1.6 but less than a 2.0.
Any suggestions?
Oh - and not over $30,00 here - about a Focus price.

Oh dear.
Valiants are so very sad.
My brother in law had one.
White.
EXTREMELY sad.
I don't trust a word you are typing.

All posted up and nowhere to go.
Had the response written then lost the wireless connection.
I believe however, I'd made reference to Hell's predeliction to seeing me as a Ku Klux Klan member and then drawing parallels between the white Valiant and racial prejudice.
Surely the Megane is harmless by comparison.

Skalie you are a study in Gender Relations yourself.
It's interesting you've contrived a confrontation.
To suit your ends I think.

Go for the focus, fuck that french piece rubbish that is the megane (apparently they are prone to spontaneous combustion). Think ford, think cheap and readily available parts when needed.

Get an SUV with at least a 5.7 You can drive to work in comfort, and hunt and fish with it on the weekends. Make sure it has comfy heated leather power seats. And Dual zone air conditioning. Anything less is just some wierd little box that art students think is cute.

In the interests of making this thread somewhat usefull, I used to have one of these....

Bought it off a Hungarian junkie in Sydney for 100$A. Push button automatic, push a button on the dash to go forwards, push another one to go backwards.

The buttons lit up.

I had a freind that had a pushbutton shift corvair. I hated to ride up front because there was always an overwhelming urge to push the reverse button while she was driving just to see what would happen.

If it were me I'd try throwing a bottle of teflon in the 323, they used to be pretty zippy cars if I'm not mistaking them for a 626 or something.

Absolut, I assume you want: 1) A car to keep for a long time; 2) reliability; and 3) good mileage. If so, you should get either a Toyota Echo, Corolla, or Camry, depending upon your pocketbook. The Honda Civic and Accord are also right up there.

For what it's worth, Consumer's Digest essentially backs me up on this.

Amen.

Ford is American, although I think the Focus is built in Europe (but they may build them all over). Holden is owned by GM, but I don't think they import US models.) I like the Focus, but I have never driven one.

My dad has a Pontiac GTO, which is really a LHD 2-dr V8 Holden Monaro. Which is probably like a modern day Valiant Charger (and likely more expensive that a Focus anyways).

Get a Mad Max looking car.

MAN! If this car is around in the states,It would stop everyone at a local Sonic on a Saturday night.
Door handles look like AMC,heck the entire car looks like a Javelin a little.
The fact it's a Charger with a Hemi straight 6 is crazy. There are just too many unknowns about this car that gear heads in the states would just scratch their heads.
Anyway,I have no fucking clue what cars y'all drive out there. Ya keep anything that looks like a Mustang? Shame y' don't got American.

HEY! First On Race Day!!
Only gripes I got with Ford are their smaller than Chevy interiors and you need to buy a fucking tool for smog parts diagnosis.
Chevy just a paper clip.
Dodge just turn yer key off and on 3 times.
Other than that,Fords are fucking bulletproof. Mustangs and trucks and Vans, anyway.More Fords are in Police cars, ambulances and other state vehicles than any other make, and that's no coincidence.
When I shuttled for the Airport,I drove a Ford van(92 model) with over 500,000 miles on the odometer. It drove like it was still new.
FORDS RULE!!!!!!

Ford doesn't back their product. Two blown head gaskets and a transmission tell me this...
Twice the car was one day out of warranty (which expired on a Sunday) and once I was 5 miles over the warranty...5!
