Sponge Bob Square pants
It's getting a little old but still fun!
The all-points-bulletin would sound a little strange: Victim is described as absorbent, yellow and porous. Last known address: Pineapple under the sea.
Kids probably would recognize the description. It's SpongeBob SquarePants, the lovable cartoon character that turns up daily on television on Nickelodeon, flipping Krabby patties at a burger shack for his underwater friends.
Burger King restaurants throughout the nation were given 9-foot-tall inflatable dolls of SpongeBob to sit atop their roofs as a promotional tie-in for the SpongeBob movie that debuted Nov. 16.
However, the blowup figures are being "spongenapped," as one Burger King spokesman calls it. The thefts are taking place throughout the nation.
"I guess there is something strangely compelling about a canary-yellow, nine-foot-tall inflatable figure," said Eric Anderson, the spokesman. "SpongeBob is really a pop culture icon."
The Burger King at the intersection of Douglas and Sierra College boulevards in Granite Bay lost its 50-pound inflatable in November.
"It only lasted three days," said manager Dawn Koleff.
Two Burger King restaurants in Redwood City reported thefts of their dolls recently. Nationwide, more than 50 "spongenappings" have been reported.
That doesn't sit well with the smallfries who adore the character.
"I think it's stupid," said 11-year-old Max Smith of Granite Bay as he dined with his mother at the scene of the crime. "The person shouldn't have done it. They could have gotten hurt on the roof."
Lorie Smith, Max’s mother, said, "Somebody always has to spoil it. Whoever stole it, what are they going to do with it?"
Another Granite Bay youngster, Zachary Rogalski, 9, walked into the restaurant with friends and was asked if he was upset about the theft of SpongeBob.
"Kind of," he said. "I like him."
Restaurant owner Todd Broadland took the thievery in stride.
"I think it's just a prank from one of the local high schools," he said.
