The pics don't even do it justice. The UofH campus is just full of awesome trees. It's the most beautiful part of the island I've been to. When I went to Hawaii with my wife a few years ago, we were in Waikiki but rented a car and drove around the island. Much nicer away from the beachfront. Manaua Bay (I think that is the spelling) was nice snorkeling with tame fish. I remember that drive because I heard the news that Chris Farley died there.
I also officially proposed to my wife on a hike in the rainforest up to a waterfall. THere is a classic story there. It wasn't quite as romantic as it sounds, though. I guess they've had a problem with flash floods in the stream bed descending from the waterfall. The park wasn't officially open and we had to climb over a fence (which from the shape of the fence was a pretty common mode of entry). There were also huge signs all over warning about flash floods, yadda yadda yadda. Yuzuru wasn't too keen on going up there but I'd had this all planned and didn't have a contigency for giving her the ring. She knew I had (we bought it together) and that I was going to give it to her in Hawaii, so I wanted to do something unexpected. She figured I'd give it to her at the dinner we had planned.
Do we climb up through the forest which is just beautiful. Neither of us are really relaxed as we both expect to get washed away by a wall of water any moment. But eventually we make it up there. The waterfall isn't very big, abou a 2 feet stream of water. But it is a cool location. We ran into another guy walking up and I had him snap a couple pictures of me down on a knee on top of a rock in front of the falls. Yuzuru is laughing in all of them.
Later on, hiking up higher on the mountainside in a non-flash flood zone, we were surprised by a gang of wild chihuahas that came out of the jungle. 3 of them, in formation behind the largest one, materialized out of nowhere and ran alongside us on the road/path for a minute or so and then darted back into the undergrowth. Surreal.
Anyway, Hawaii is very beautiful. I was really amazed by the trees on the campus. Very peaceful and interesting. Next time you go there, be sure to swing by and wander about for a while.
