Passing Thru

I will be making a road trip in April, driving to Oregon to visit family. My intention is to travel through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and on to LA, then north.

I have plans to meet one asylumite in the LA region, and if the opportunity presents itself would like to meet more. If anyone is interested, either post here or let me know via PM. I am also up for meeting others along that general route, as well. My itinerary is at this point quite flexible.

You, Tal, Flo and I could meet in LA. Bring your knife.
Alternatively, see ya on the central coast.

I am so up for meeting you, cw, and flocat all at once. Name the time and place, and I'm there if it's humanly possible.

You are most welcome to join in. I was hoping to see you in Oregon, in any case.

On the return route from Oregon I expect to pass thru your area, last week or so of April.

Schedule up date:

Itinerary (tentative):

April 7 Thursday; Depart Shreveport; overnite west Texas (El Paso)
April 8 Friday: Depart El Paso; overnite southern Cal (east side of LA)
April 9 Saturday; in LA; overnite NW side of LA metroplex
April 10 Sunday - mini-pissup; Tal, Flocat, cw, ignatz(?), myself - venue TBA

I am soliciting input here folks. Anybody who wants to come is more than welcome.

[edited to make addendum]

My schedule from April 10th on is pretty much completely open. I'd very much like to meet other Oregon Asylumites (you up for that VKL?), possibly some Washingtonians. Once in Oregon SLH and I may be travelling together a good bit, at this point it is hard to say. He will arrive in Oregon by air on April 19th.

I expect to depart Oregon either the 26th or the 27th, traveling with my Mom. We tentatively plan to proceed SE across Oregon, into nort-central Nevada, then SE across Nevada toward St. George, Utah. We expect to see Cruise Director there. From St George we expect to head east on secondary roads, taking in the sights along the way.

In texas we will most likely stop at Mugtoe's and Oxsans, then spend a day or so with relatives in the Ft. Worth area.

Nothing firmed up yet except departure and travel schedule first 2 to 3 days.

Is there anything in particular you'd like to see or do in Los Angeles? How much of Sunday do you have to work with?

All of Sunday is open at this point. I tentatively based the gathering on Sunday evening in consideration of your schedule, flocats, and cw's.

I haven't been in LA other than passing through since 1974, so what there is to see is kinda easy - everything. I do want to see that museum ignatz mentions - it looks fascinating. Maybe do that Monday the 11th.

Suggestions?

Most of the stuff I know is out here on the West side of town, near the beaches. That may not be the most convenient location for everyone.
There is, however, a very fun Italian restaurant here which serves immense amounts of pasta for relatively little money, has an honor Chianti system, outdoor dining, etc. If y'all were out on this side of town, that's a place I'd recommend for eats.

Philippe's, downtown, claims to be the place that invented the French dip. They do have excellent sandwiches.

Other than that, one can always hit the beach, Hollywood, tour some beautiful homes in Pasadena, or whatever else you like. I'd be happy to show anyone UCLA, if such was interesting to anyone.

My CV is somewhat...er...light on published papers . It's one of the reasons I'm aiming for a teaching, rather than research, job. But heck, I can bust out the upside-down goggles and everyone can give them a try. I'll show you all the MRI if you want.

Smug--well, I'm not much of a hata, so I guess I must be a playa. Unless you were making a clever play on words with "playa", the Spanish for "beach".
