North Korea Admits to Having Nukes
Linky
Of course, they're claiming they need them because they're afraid of us. I agree in practical terms that if you have nukes, odds are that the US isn't going to come after you.
At the same time, I'm not really worried about Kim Jong-Il using his weapons, because to my knowledge North Korea is not pursuing any interests abroad. Aren't they pretty much a closed state? It doesn't seem likely that isolationists would want to interfere with other countries' interests.
Thoughts?

North Korea, at least, claims to have nukes. They are pretty damn sneaky, those orientals.
I think that their main concerns are ensuring that South Korea doesn't move against them and screwing enough out of the US for concessions, real or imagine. Of course, Kim Jong-Il may not be a completely rational actor.

No more need to give them aid of any variety ever. They had a sweet deal going when we were bribing them not to go nuclear. That's over at this point. They'd better hope those warheads are edible.

You can't have hair like that and be considered rational.

it took North Korea a while to realise that following the Soviet method of blatently lying about your capabilities is the best form of defence against America.

What rational actor approves the kidnapping of a dozen Japanese citizens to teach their security services about Tokyo life?
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4123277.stm et al)
If someone this insane actually has nukes then invasion is actually more desirable than less. If we can go to war for "regieme change" or "Saddam is evil and doing terrible things to his people" (which is the post WMD arguments afaik) then the same arguments apply - are nukes that may or may not exist more deadly to troops than WMD?

Perhaps he won't use them.
What about the fact that he is more than happy to sell them to people that will use them?

The problem with invading North Korea is the potential obliteration of Seoul that would be the immediate result (even without nukes).

That is a concern, although I guess that it isn't so big a concern as that our ally Pakistan was giving away nuclear tech and that Russia's control over their nuclear stockpile might not be as strong as we would like (missing 'suitcase nukes' and all).
The problem with North Korea is that there might not be an agreeable solution at all, certainly not an active one. Some version of 'wait and see' is also a far more dangerous potential solution than it was (say) over the matter of Iraq, as was pointed out in PDM before, but it might be the only solution, given the potential devastation that direct military action might cause.
