Asylum front page columns

Hi People

I've really enjoyed reading the columns on the front page when I first joined this site in 01.

It seems like the column contributers have stopped updating their stuff. Which is a shame, really.

Anyways, how do we go about reinvigorating the front page columns?

1. Flog the columnites until they resume their activities
2. Open up a few more spaces for interested members. It's time for a generation change in the columns
3. Let the columns die
4. Columns? what columns?

Cheers

The problem was, and I include myself in this, people come here to relax and have fun. When you start putting a deadline on them to come up with stuff, their enthusiasm for contributing mysteriously dries up pretty quickly. That was my experience trying to run the mainpage content, anyway.

I liked the columns quite a bit myself, but they died a natural death. I'm not against looking into somehow revamping the mainpage content, but I'm not really chomping at the bit to do so either.

I apologize if my post could be interpreted as hinting at deadlines. That was not my intention at all.

I was revisiting all the great content there, and thought to myself: "Gee, what great stuff. I wish there was more of it".

What was the original philosophy/modus operandi behind the columns anyway?

Hell, I'd volounteer to help pick up some slack - content wise... if there is an interest in something new being added.

Cheers

I agree with Paint. It was a bit of work doing all that and also trying to get the writers to produce.
Back then, the front page was a busy place but the site mellowed and the forums became the only activity.

I think inviting submissions to some designated editor(s) for review and/or posting to the front page is a viable possibility. I am no editor, but I'd gladly review potential content and give my vote toward including/excluding things.

No format, no subject list - just whatever someone might want to submit.

i figure something like that is only worth the time if it's going to be fairly constant. if you're going to check for writing, you'd want frequent updates. i personally could probably add something if i was told what to write about.

I want music reviews on the front page.

Here's mine. 11-22-03

FISHNATION, The Christmas Edition - Review

Answering the musical question "All the other
nations suck" is the FISHNATION MUSIC GROUP.
Musically diverse yet thematically cohesive, this CD
allows the listener access to a collection of ways the
words "We live in fishnation" can be expressed.

Speaking along is made fun and easy with the
considerate inclusion of the words "the end"
in many tracks and a virtually hypnotic reiteration of
the lyrics.

Why is this "The Christmas Edition"? I DON"T KNOW!
Perhaps it's because it was a gift. Perhaps it's
because the festival song is neat to hum to. Perhaps
Karen promised Santa a wet Christmas. In any case,
it was well worth the cost and didn't suck. But you
knew that.

If I recall correctly, the front page more or less fizzled out when it was down for an extended period of time while dingle was in rehab.

Amen.

What the front page clearly lacks is a level of excellence that can only be provided by writers of the highest caliber, columnists who left mediocrity in the dust long before they passed GO and collected their $200. What is needed is perfection, shibumi, a paragon of human perfection. What is needed is someone like moi.

I do agree.
Of course now you know your first story will have to be 'why is wonder bitching all the time and why Buddha's not impressed.'
