Milestone Post 1500

Not really a milestone post thread, I hit 1500 posts a long time ago, however the second gulf war has now claimed the lives of over 1500 US soldiers, all of whom were someones child, and many of whom were someones parents. GO US FOREIGN POLICY!

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=sto...raq_us_deaths_8

I sure am glad that Saddam Hussain didn't really have any nuclear, biological or chemical weapons, or that death toll would be much higher.

Democracy 1, 1500 US service men and women 0.

1500 people who joined up to be the big stick in the government's hand. Dying is part of the risk of that job. It isn't as if the US military is so small that 1500 members of it being killed is such a big deal.

What is a big deal, potentially, are the current recruitment problems of the US army and army National Guard. They are taking steps to deal with that, though; it'll be expensive, but it's a seller's market at the moment.

Hmmmm.......displaying just a bit of bias there.

Saddam didn't need NBC weapons - we brought the NC part with us, used it freely, and continue to do so to this day. Before the accounting is done, probably half or more of the US service personnel ever to rotate through a tour in Iraq will pay in their health and lives for the use of those weapons.

No way to predict the effects on the Iraqi populace at this point, or on the poor sods from other countries whose governments let themselves be roped into that quagmire.

1500 people who joined up because they wanted a job. I totally agree about the risky job, and the size of the US army is large enough that it can lose one and a half thousand people and not bat an eyelid. That doesn't negate the fact that those people died, and died doing thier jobs in a war started with an excuse which turned out to be wrong.

4b - dont get all uptight about it - i started this thread more as a tip of the hat to the men and women who have lost thier lives, rather than an attack on US foreign policy which i turned it into. Apologies, and kudos for quitting.

I was trying to decide between:

"Those are the sort of odds I like"

and

"So we're winning then?"

But i couldn't decide.

While tragic on the individual level, 1500 deaths wouldn't even register on the historical scale of wartime casualties. More than half that number died just rehearsing for D-Day. Get a fucking grip.

It does appear to be affecting recruitment, though. That might be a function of the way that recruitment is done, with very little mention of the actual risks of service, but lots of talk about how they'll learn a trade and go to college afterwards with financial support. Nobody seems to want to be in an 'Army of One' when the bullets and bodyparts are flying.

Jesus, I know this, even the death toll for 9/11 was 2752 (according to CNN). War isn't a fucking numbers game? Do you really think Iraq is going well? or that it is a success?

As far as liberation of the people of iraq it doesn't look all that 'free' on TV

I used to work with a couple of Iraqi chaps, they were also avoiding the Hussein era, and, like you say, you couldn't meet nicer guys, funny fuckers.

They also shared my "It's more fun to play darts than do work" ethic, however they tended to cheat.

Once an Arab, always an Arab, and all that.

Did D-Day go smashingly, Aminal? Or Pearl Harbor? Or...? Was WWII a success?

There were clearly mistakes made in Iraq. I would argue that there always are. As for whether it is a success or not, check back with me in 5-10 years. Oh, and believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see. It's a war.

Yes, there was a draft in WWII. Every major (and some minor) war the US has been involved with up to and including Vietnam involved involuntary servitude for the young men of this country. It started with the Civil War.
