The .308 is nice, I hear they have a bunch of new mags available for them now that solved some of the reliability issues they were having. I already have too many 308s for hunting to buy a .308 upper so it doesn't really make any sense for me. I was thinking about getting a .50 beowulf upper though, that makes even less sense which is why I want one I think. If you haven't seen one check out this review @ gunblast (http://www.gunblast.com/Alex_Overwatch.htm). They claim .5MOA @ 100 yards with 325 grain JHP factory AA ammo. That's a brick. For awhile, I've wanted a carbine length rifle chambered in a magnum handgun caliber for 100-200 yd shots, but I dislike the ruger .44 magnum and no one else makes one. 50 beo is way overkill, just a little larger case than .500S&W but who cares.
If I were you I would wait on building a 6.8 spc upper, there's still not enough general support for the round from the reloading industry which equates to a much higher cost per round fired. That's the one redeeming feature of 5.56 nato for civilian use, ball ammo is cheap and widely available ($190 per thousand / Lake City FMJ @ ammoman.com).
For the military 6.8 SPC definitely has a role to play; self described insiders over at tacticalforums.com are doing backflips over the round claiming it has similar recoil characteristics to 5.56 but with improved terminal ballistics between 400-600 yards (but not as good as 7.62 nato). It's sort of like a compromise between 5.56 and 7.62, but gets the job done better than 5.56 in longer range engagements (think afganistan). For the civilian shooter, the high cost and lack of availability of ammo coupled with only marginally better ballistics than the 5.56 at ranges most shooters rarely even see, makes me believe we're better off waiting to see what happens with 6.8 for a while longer. If you want to shoot 400-1000 yards you're better off putting the money into a remington 700 and good optics, the rifle will hold its value, a lot more reloading options, and 7.62 nato will never go away.
With all these flavor-of-the-month calibers there's going to be a lot of obsolete hardware on the market in the next 5 years (All the wsms? 6.5 Grendel? .21 Ghengis? .458 SOCOM? .50 Beowulf? .499LW? LW7.82x24?). For most civilians, none of these new calibers are going to make sense because there just isn't an application that a more widely used caliber can't do. If I get a .50 beo upper, I'm probably being stupid by not waiting longer to see how it pans out. But I've wanted a big bullet carbine for awhile now; the ammo is being produced by aa and distributed through a number of outlets (starline is making new brass for them as well). I've got the cash to burn though and am willing to risk it. If you're worried about cost, you might want to think again about 6.8SPC. I don't even know where you could buy ammo for it now.
Just putting it out there.
