DPMS makes a nice .22LR upper 20-inch stainless 1:16 bull barrel with a standard A2 carry handle (http://www.dpmsinc.com/22_lr.html). DPMS just recently won top spot in the camp pendleton shootout for stock 'out of the box' rifles - very high quality in my experience (IMO better than bushmaster, armalite, colt, and rock river). In fact, I'm taking possesion of another one at the end of this week.

I would have also recommended Tromix.com but I just tried to log onto their website and it appears to be out of business. They were making uppers chambered in a variety varmit calibers including .17 rem, .17 tactical, .20 rem, .20 tact, as well as some monster calibers like .458 SOCOM and 50AE.

Another company named MGI is making a quick change barrel upper, which allows you to change standard barrels and bolt for different calibers using the same upper; the idea has a lot of potential if it proves to be repeatable in the long term. Heres the linx regarding:

Have fun, hope this helped.

Sweeet. I didnt even think to look at DPMS for a .22 upper. I have one of their panther 308 lr's and like it a bunch. The DPMS upper looks like the perfect thing for at home live fire practice for service rifle matches.

I'll prolly build a 6.8 upper first though. And then spend all my money reloading for it and the other stuff. One day, one day I will buy a .22 upper. There's just too much stuff. I should become magically rich.

Thanks, gamecat.

The .308 is nice, I hear they have a bunch of new mags available for them now that solved some of the reliability issues they were having. I already have too many 308s for hunting to buy a .308 upper so it doesn't really make any sense for me. I was thinking about getting a .50 beowulf upper though, that makes even less sense which is why I want one I think. If you haven't seen one check out this review @ gunblast (http://www.gunblast.com/Alex_Overwatch.htm). They claim .5MOA @ 100 yards with 325 grain JHP factory AA ammo. That's a brick. For awhile, I've wanted a carbine length rifle chambered in a magnum handgun caliber for 100-200 yd shots, but I dislike the ruger .44 magnum and no one else makes one. 50 beo is way overkill, just a little larger case than .500S&W but who cares.

If I were you I would wait on building a 6.8 spc upper, there's still not enough general support for the round from the reloading industry which equates to a much higher cost per round fired. That's the one redeeming feature of 5.56 nato for civilian use, ball ammo is cheap and widely available ($190 per thousand / Lake City FMJ @ ammoman.com).

For the military 6.8 SPC definitely has a role to play; self described insiders over at tacticalforums.com are doing backflips over the round claiming it has similar recoil characteristics to 5.56 but with improved terminal ballistics between 400-600 yards (but not as good as 7.62 nato). It's sort of like a compromise between 5.56 and 7.62, but gets the job done better than 5.56 in longer range engagements (think afganistan). For the civilian shooter, the high cost and lack of availability of ammo coupled with only marginally better ballistics than the 5.56 at ranges most shooters rarely even see, makes me believe we're better off waiting to see what happens with 6.8 for a while longer. If you want to shoot 400-1000 yards you're better off putting the money into a remington 700 and good optics, the rifle will hold its value, a lot more reloading options, and 7.62 nato will never go away.

With all these flavor-of-the-month calibers there's going to be a lot of obsolete hardware on the market in the next 5 years (All the wsms? 6.5 Grendel? .21 Ghengis? .458 SOCOM? .50 Beowulf? .499LW? LW7.82x24?). For most civilians, none of these new calibers are going to make sense because there just isn't an application that a more widely used caliber can't do. If I get a .50 beo upper, I'm probably being stupid by not waiting longer to see how it pans out. But I've wanted a big bullet carbine for awhile now; the ammo is being produced by aa and distributed through a number of outlets (starline is making new brass for them as well). I've got the cash to burn though and am willing to risk it. If you're worried about cost, you might want to think again about 6.8SPC. I don't even know where you could buy ammo for it now.

Just putting it out there.

I'll be reloading the 6.8. With it using a .270 bullet, you'll be able to get the 115 grain spire ponts and such forever. Midwayusa already has starline brass in. If I stock up on brass, it'll be all good. I'm just wanting something for whitetail thats lighter than my panther, and I'm just really comfortable with the AR platform, and hit better with it on snap shots than I do with my hunting style rifles. That and I really like reloading oddball type stuff. I've come up with some great loads for the .270 WSM, and really enjoy loading for the 7.62x25. I load at least 100-150 .223 a week, so an extra box or two of 6.8 loading won't really bother me. If all else fails, I can have fun forming them from .30 winchesters. But I doubt it'll get to that. Besides, I have too many .308's already. Well, almost too many.

The 6.5 grendel looked pretty cool for accuracy work, but once you leave the service rifle fold in most of the matches I shoot, you might as well go with some sort of ultra-perfect .243 bolt gun on a mcmillan stock, with all the beer can sights and such. So it really doesnt hold much for me. The .50 beowulf looked ok, but I'm more of a light and fast than a slow and heavy with rifles. Handguns, I'm all about 230 grains at 900 fps. But have been known to tote .311 85 grain slugs at 1600 fps. That beowulf might be cool for some things though. Variety is the spice of life.
