This happens all the time. Men your age (and mine) get all fired up about leaving something behind that's worthwhile and lasting. They start woodworking projects and make crappy furniture. They write books and start dreaming of what can still happen.

If you're lucky and take real good care of yourself you'll be around another 20-30 years. Make it count. Do what all these old white folks around the country have done. Leverage all your assets and sell your home, buy a state of the art Motor Coach or Conversion Bus and winter in the southwest U.S. and during the summer they drive up to tour Alaska and Canada. pretty nice arrangement if you ask me.

Wish I would have know that you were in the area I'd have bought ya'll dinner at the Hotel Congress. At the very least given you the directions to a few awesome sights in the general vicinity of Tucson.

Catalina Mouintains
The White Mountains
Salt River Canyon

I will hit 5-0 this year. It will be the last birthday I celebrate.

Leave behind something worthwhile? What, are you still on drugs? I have almost completed a novel and have two others, as well as a screenplay, in the works. I don't give a rat's ass about leaving them behind. I just want to finish them and sell them for lots of money that my wife and I can spend before we die and leave nothing to the kids but burial costs.

Christ, this isn't some mid-life crisis, you desert rat, it's an awakening to the fact that I am soon gonna be kid-free and able to be a kid again myself (as if I grew up). This isn't about buying a convertible sports car, wearing cowboy boots or joining the Hair Club for Men. I am not in some race against the white shoes and white belt buckled at the solar plexus that Simon appears to be only hours from. On the contrary, I am like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon of that utter waste of time and money called parenthood. The light is at the end of the tunnel and it isn't a train!
Yessiree, I am looking forward to living until I die.

So, Lanin, do you have kids or are you happy?

Well. it appears we have several would-be authors and at least one authentic author among us. I believe Loser sold a book after several try's.

No I'm sober...Alcohol and Drug Free. The desert has it's charms this time of year, plus the cost of living out in the middle of nowhere is affordable and my dog can...well.....be a dog. It's pretty nice now as I'm sure you noticed, but in a couple of months I'll be hating life and dreaming of arctic getaways.

Yes, I am happily without children, at least the ones that need lots of stuff, wreck cars, steal money from my wallet, and cause me to get giddy about a birthday after 40.

My child and responsibility is my dog. She's more of a good friend who can be very affectionate, eats about $2 worth of dog food a day, and likes to sleep outside in the dirt. She could come in if she wanted but likes it outside.

Cheers

Would that it were true. I came close a couple of years ago, but got caught in a political struggle between two editors. I never even received a rejection. Just a note from MY editor that they were not going to make a decsion on the book. Still don't know what that means. Now, I'm getting really, really close with a couple markets, but I not quite there yet.

Anyone can sell a book, all you need is an infinite amount of patience and fortitude. Also, it helps if you like disappointment, betrayal, and talking to fat, smelly crazy people.*

Best of luck TT, I suspect you have what it takes, and a belated happy bday.

*you may know them as editors.

So I guess you won't be posting around here as much anymore, considering you need to do something now that makes you feel like you're living a life worth living.

One of my 5 year goals I set is the magic 100,000 posts.
That would be marvelous.
