U.N. landmine commerical won't air in US.

A U.N. commercial depicts American girls playing in a soccer match. A girl steps on a landmine and there's a big explosion. Kids get blown apart. CNN and other networks don't want to air the ad.

The explosion appears to kill and injure some girls, sparking panic and chaos among parents and other children. Shrieks of horror are heard through much of the spot, and a father is shown cradling his daughter's lifeless body, moments after celebrating a goal she had scored.

It closes with a tag line reading: "If there were landmines here, would you stand for them anywhere? Help the U.N. eradicate landmines everywhere."

I can't wait to watch that later.

The US will never sign anything to ban landmines because
i) They couldn't maintain their commitment to defend the 38th parallel
ii) As I understand it, bans don't take into account that the US rarely uses 'dumb mines', most have a defined lifetime, a means of tracking and retrieval or they are placed discrimintly in locations where retrieval is possible.

I guess Funky or Weasel would know if that was true though, I may have been indocrinated by servants of the man.

if there were landmines here, i'd damn sure buy a metal detector.
and a trowel.
and go find enough to dig up and rebury in more opportune places.
wonder what happens if you duct-tappe one to the underside of a manhole cover and run a tripwire up through the holes?

Not a bad move on the UN's part, actually. Make an ad that might not run, get free publicity about the ad, etc. It does sound like it would have been effective had it run, though.
