Rhode Island. Mercy Lena Brown was only 19 years old on January 17, 1892 when she died of consumption. On March 17, 1892, Mercy's body was dug up, her heart cut out and burned on a near by rock because the towns folk suspected her of being a vampire. Historically there has been a connection between vampire claims/sightings and consumption – in fact towards the end of the sickness the sick person started looking a bit like how the vampire in nosferatu was portrayed.
The ashes from mercy's burned heart were fed to mercy's brother, who was also sick with consumption, thinking that the sickness was her attacking him and hoping the ashes of her heart would cure him. He died shortly there after. It is said her story became so famous because consumption was rife in the town and it was common for the towns folk to look for an evil that may be causing it , combined with the appearance of the sick, the fact that Mercy's body remained so well preserved and it would seem that mercy's decomposition was very animated (no embalming yet) she would sit up, jerk and emit groaning noises as wind escaped over her vocal chords while her body bloated.
Killing "vampires" began in Europe. Exhuming the body of the suspect, driving a stake through the heart, rearranging the skeletal remains, removing vital organs, or cremating the entire corpse was the usual tactic for battling this evil, combined with a healthy dose of
Ergot surely. Bring on the Werewolves.
