lizards cost a bit for initial setup, and eat live insects, but other than that, they're very easy to take care of... I hear about the same for snakes. They're not exceptionally lovey though.

My mouse just died two nights ago I had two, and the little cute one who used to stand up on his hind legs like a little rory calhoon to greet you passed away. J and I cried.

Fish aren't too bad, but can be a bit of a bitch (smell wise)... they're also not as "cool" as some other options.

Pets rock. I love animals... even the ones that smell (no, I'm not talking about aslym members)

It is said that pet ownership increases average life span or some shit.
I own four small dogs.
Sure they shit and piss and leave hair sometimes,and I have to clean up my backyard once a week and they want to fuck the big dogs next door and had to mend the dividing fence countless times,but the benefits far outweigh the annoyances as far as I believe.
It's nice when they all crawl up on you and find a comfortable spot on my belly.
When they play and Ollie tries to fuck Domino but Ollie keeps missing.
Just pure joy;worth all the hassles.
