It is sometimes hard to understand why people do what they do, I agree. I agree, also, that in terms of the large-scale behavior of matter in the universe, our own lives and behavior are pretty insignificant.
On the other hand, in terms of the behavior of other humans, our actions can be pretty significant; even if it's all feces-flinging and screeching at chimps from the Other-Side-Of-The-River tribe, surely whether we choose to fling our feces, and at whom, is significant. In as much as what we do can influence the actions and emotions of others, our actions must have significance.
Actually, I wonder if the blend of arrogance and humility you are talking about might be a very healthy state. Simultaneous recognition of both the probable insignificance of our lives on a cosmic scale and the importance of how each of us lives our lives in human terms seems realistic.
Or perhaps I have completely misunderstood you, and am simply flinging my own irrelevant excreta. Probably.
