When is a pet just an animal?

They are not just animals.

Having had cats in my family as long as I can remember, I have always loved them. Animals in general are a great thing to have around, but there is always something about cats. Be it their independence even while staying loyal. They have been entertaining and made me laugh, and pissed me off to no end, like every other part of my family. Then when it comes time and they get old, they get sick, and they die. And it hurts just like it was any other part of the family.

His name was Jazzpurr, he died last night, and he was part of my family.

The best thing is to go get another one.
Hundreds are getting killed in shelters every day.
Go save one.
Sorry for your loss.

In answer to your question:
My gecko is not much of a pet. I think of him as more of an animal. Part of the reason is he won't eat, and will probably die because of it, and part of it is because he bites when I try to change his cage.

It's kind of like a fish. It's hard to get attached to things with almost no personality. Actually, frankly, my fish have had more personality than he does.

I am sorry, though, for your loss. I cried for a couple of hours after my mouse died. I can't even imagine what it would be like to not have my kitty cat

Yon can replace a pet, but you can never replace a person. I'd like to say that to the hundereds of people that have lost their lives trying to save their pet. How many families have cried over the grave of a lost one because they tried to rescue their pet from the frozen pond?

Pets are a novelty. But you still get attached to the furry little fuckers.

I love my cat. When I got her, I also got another one. He died while I was in school, under the same strange circumstances as the cat I had before those two (i.e. Dad found them dead in our yard one day, no visible scrapes or wounds to explain their deaths). We're guessing they got bitten by a snake or something. Which kind of worries me because this cat loves playing with anything she can catch .

Sorry to hear about your loss, VKL.

Probably about half as many as have wept at the funerals of those they lost because they were trying to make a pet out of a wild grizzly cub while wearing a clown suit made out of raw salmon and a hamburger hat.

Thanks to everyone with your condolences. However, I cannot even begin to agree with those who say that pets are just animals. Some cases I can understand. It is hard to get attached to fish, or caged animals. But every cat my family or I have ever had has been different. Each one had their own quirks and behaviors that made them completely unique. They all became part of my family. I haven't seen my father cry in years, yet I saw that very thing yesterday. That is how special this 'animal' was and how much he ment to my family. My parents still have one cat, and I still have my two, but there is no replacing Jazzpurr.

Obviously people have pets for different reasons. But if you are a pet owner that doesn't get attached to those pets, what is your problem? Have you no respect for life in general? Or is it only people who matter? I have and have had pets that were better people than most people are. What does that say about humans?

cats murder animals that are smaller then them, and they will attack almost anything that spooks them. do most people do that?

The difference between pets and food is upheld only by the significance that we bestow on both. When stuck on a life raft with nothing but fresh water and said pet, that difference is diminished with each passing day. I'm not saying that setting a cat or a dog or a guinea pig on a higher tier than say that hamburger or fried chicken you just ate is wrong. I'm just saying that it is a conscious decision on your part. If you don't believe it, just ask a Korean.

Nope, pets are food that we have either chosen not to eat, or have not had to eat,...yet.

And certian tribes of humans have practiced cannibalism. Considering humans are nothing more than animals when you get right down to it, does that make them right or wrong?

right and wrong are concepts that vary from society to society. they are for the most part, useless.

That is what makes you so remarkable, Hawley; because it is common knowledge among every society on Earth that you are just wrong.
