LINDALE - A Lindale man was hospitalized over the weekend after an unexpected brawl at his house.
Aaron Bernard, 21, had invited several friends to his family home to watch the basketball playoffs Thursday evening.
Precinct 5 Constable Dennis Taylor said a girl from Van borrowed Bernard's friend's cellular phone to call her boyfriend in Van, but he didn't answer. When her boyfriend called back, it was Bernard's friend who answered.
A verbal altercation ensued, as part of a feud that Bernard's father said had been going on for weeks.
Taylor said the fight "kinda got worked out," but then another Lindale boy made a call to Van.
"It was supposed to be a couple of Van boys coming over to meet a couple of Lindale boys," Taylor said, but 20 to 25 boys from Van and Canton showed up at Bernard's house.
Jim Bernard, Aaron's father, said Bernard went out to tell the group to leave his property.
"He was trying to stop the whole thing," Jim Bernard said.
The first punch was directed at Bernard, and it knocked him unconscious. Taylor said as Bernard lay on the ground, others kicked him in the face and beat him severely.
About 35 boys, golf clubs and pool sticks were involved, Taylor said. Many were bruised and hurt, but Bernard was sent to the hospital with most of his facial bones broken and bruises from head to foot.
"They were mad at one of the other kids, not my son," Aaron's father said. "They didn't even know him."
Aaron received multiple reconstructive surgeries on his face. He was released from the hospital Sunday, but will undergo more facial surgery in the coming weeks.
Two men were arrested in connection with the fight.
Jonathan Dorsey Van Syckle, 18, of Canton, was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was arrested Tuesday. He was released the same day on a $75,000 bond.
Jeremiah Hansford Smith, 19, of Van, was also arrested on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was arrested Tuesday. He posted a $30,000 bond and was released the same day.
Taylor said he will continue to investigate the incident.
"We are filing on everybody that hit Aaron Bernard while he was passed out," Taylor said.
