My grandmother and aunt lost their house to a tornado in the mid 90s. Half the town where my entire family is from is gone, the house where my mother grew up, it was all lost. In that situation, immediate aid arrived, helped to clear up the damage, to deal with the situation and the displaced individuals. But to imagine that the aid had never arrived for days, and that my grandmother and aunt where forced to stay in a shelter without running water or electricity, that she was not given her insulin, unable to communicate to us that they were indeed alright, I would be angry, I'd be emotional, but I'd want to speak out, I'd want to cry out, to question....Why? And that was just a tornado in the mid 90s, there was not a DHS, there was not the emphasis nor the billions of dollars being poured into a department that was supposed to specialize in situations such as these. Politics has everything to do with this situation in NO, which is undoubtedly more horrific than the experience my family went through. Why not discuss the politics? It does not mean that you do not care for the people or town of NO if you question why these people have suffered. It does not mean that you are sitting idly by and not helping out in any way that you can by volunteering, donating....What it does mean is that you are angry... Angry that this has happened to unfortunate people, and that our government doesn't seem to give a rats ass. I am still baffled why you don't want to discuss the politics of the situation. We are not bastardizing the delicacies of this situation by asking questions, because they are questions that need to be dealt with to ensure that this never happens again.
These are not "self serving arguments", these are arguments that serve the good of all American citizens, for future incidents, so that help will be ready, help will be present. America needs to have a voice concerning how NO was handled. And even if my questions and comments don't do jack shit on their own, they are still questions that need to be raised, that must be raised. Do you think silence on this matter is going to bring justice to those who have been left to suffer? This is not just a natural disaster, this is also a man made tragedy, and it is because I care that I question, and frankly, I am shocked that you are not doing the same. And even if you are not going to take part in discussing and questioning the elements of the NO situation, please do not chastise those who do.
Now I will wait for the personal jabs and the profanity from a person who knows pretty much nothing about me, or the amount of effort I have put into helping the victims of Katrina (as that topic will surely be raised).
