Interesting responses
Okay, in my school newspaper there is a small opinion side-bar called "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," where it reviews the good, the bad, and the ugly of the school and the rest of the world. In the previous issue under "The Ugly" they had put "The new cheerleading dress pants. . . . Doesn't that defeat their whole purpose?"
Here is what two varsity cheerleaders had to say. I am posting their letters as is.
This letter is concerning, "The good, the bad, and the ugly" in the Oct. 20 issue of the Pioneer. One of the thirteen people in a classroom said the pants were "ugly". One person said, "I think they're cute."
Also, how do cheerleading pants "defeat the purpose ?" The purpose of cheerleading is to support athletics. How does wearing pants defeat that purpose? I personally didn't try out for cheerleading so I could wear a short skirt, I tried out because it was something that looked fun and I wanted to do it. There are lots of schools around here that have cheerleaders who now wear pants. Times change and right now, cheerleading pants are in. -Megan Dorn, BHS Varsity Cheerleader
Now, the second letter.
My name is Missy Erikson. I have been a Cheerleader for the past three years. This being so, I know how hard it is to be a Cheerleader and the amount of time we put into it. The purpose of Cheerleading is to support athletics and other organizations throughout the school. It's not very easy to give support without getting any in return from anyone but our parents and coach. Even so, I think we do a pretty good job. But when I pick up the school newspaper and read under "The Ugly" part of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" it says "-The new cheerleading pants ......Doesn't that defeat their whole purpose?" I am very hurt. All we do is try to support everyone and the only thing our school newspaper has to say about us is bad. Last year the newspaper put down our pep-rallies, thus discontinuing the occasional during-school pep-rally. And now they are knocking our uniforms. What's going to be next? I understand that journalists have a right to their own opinion but does it need to come at the expense of others? A little poitive recognition might be nice for a change.
Thank you. -Missy Erikson, BHS Varsity Cheerleader
Now, the Pioneer's response.
Thanks to Missy and Megan for submitting these letters. Fact is, Megan we aren't reffering to how the cheerleading pants looked, we were talking about the fact that some cheerleaders flaunt themselves. So we posed the question, what's the point of cheerleading pants? That may apply to some of the cheerleaders, but not all, we hate to stereotype, but "the good, the bad, and the ugly" can hardly be taken seriously. Figure out what you are talking about, then write. -Ed.
So, which of the two cheerleaders stated her case best?

Was it something you would do for anybody?
Was it what you'd only do for me?
Or was it something where you acted when you saw the need
And knew that there would be a way the act could be repaid
And so it may, but for today
I want to thank you for putting me back in my snail shell
