On the whole of things, I am damn skippy.

There is the day to day stress of trying to pretend that I am PhD material, and grumbling about post-degree employment...

But these are on the whole irrelevant. I have a roof over my head, food on the table and someone to keep me warm at night.

I'm in my second year at uni which I'm really enjoying, I have the best bunch of friends, I have the most caring, intelligent, funny, gorgeous, sexy bloke who I'm totally in love with, my relationships with my family members are growing and getting better and better all the time. I still get carded for booze, sometimes for cigarettes. I've gotten to the point where, even when the shit hits the fan, I'm pretty mellow about it. I have a bunch of lamb defrosted, and I'm going to make meatballs. My dog's sleeping away in the next room. I've got the whole week off to work and catch up with my friends.

We have one of these surveys every couple of years.

I always say I'm happy in them and list the various reasons why, ongoing gratitude for the miracles of modern tech and the free market among them. Thing is, though, when I think back on the conditions I lived in when I took the first survey on this question, I was actually fairly miserable. I just didn't realize it on a day-to-day basis; it was part of the background radiation of my life.

So maybe the best I can say here is that I FEEL happy and I recognize I SHOULD be happy, rationally speaking. As to whether I actually AM happy, maybe I don't have the context to decide that yet. Ask me in a couple of years whether I was happy now.

Note: It's just "are you happy? yes or no" not "are you happy or unhappy?"

So if you're not happy, but not unhappy, then NO is the correct answer.

Considering all of the alternatives....Yes I'm happy. With very few exceptions all of the people I was running around with 6-7 years ago are dead or in prison. I'm still sober with only one major relapse and will be celebrating 2 years sobriety again in a month or so. I have my own place to stay almost free of rent thanks to good friends.

I'm rebuliding a good relationship with my family that was destroyed beyond repair at one time. I have a good circle of friends who I can rely upon and trust. My dog is happy and able to run around as she pleases free and unchained (she stay's close to home).
