Hmm...PHP isn't linked against any of the gif libraries, although it should really be relying on GD to handle that stuff. I guess I could try linking it to an external version of GD with gif support to see if that fixes the problem.

Or not. Further reading suggests that php 4.3.9+ supports gifs(both read and write) through the native GD library, and symmetry is running 4.4.0. So it's dingles fault.
