XP won't install...dammit

I wanted to go dual boot because getting my POS all-in-wonder to scan and copy without the windows drivers is proving to be a monumental pain in the ass.

Also, just because I want to do it.

So, I decided to wipe the HD again, and partition it down the middle, NTFS for XP Pro and EXT3 for Linux.

Only problem is, the XP cd hangs on install. It boots just fine, gets to the part where it says "Setup is checking your system configuration," and then does nothing.

Any ideas?

Maybe your cd has a scratch. Have it cleaned?
Now remember that I don't know jack shit, but it seems a simple answer to a complicated question.

Is your main C: drive formated for NTFS or Linux?

The HD is formatted to EXT3.

Did you try selecting a different XP kernel as I suggested in chat? The filesystem shouldn't make much of a difference, but you could try booting off a Linux CD and wiping the filesystem data completely by installing a new Dos disklabel.

It never even gets to the point where I can do that. It boots, says it's examining my hardware, and then hangs at a black screen indefinately.

Anyway, yes, I think it's going to come down to wiping the disk and installing over dos...I don't even know where to start with that, project for the weekend I guess.

Installing an empty dos disklabel is fairly trivial. Boot off a Linux CD in rescue mode(don't get it to mount any partitions or examine your installation if you're using a Redhat variant), run fdisk on your hard disk and just hit "o" and "w" to clear the partition table and write the changes.

That should leave you with a completely blank disk as far as XP and Linux are concerned.
