Firefox and mpegs

Yeah, sorry about yet another Firefox question, but that seems to be what I keep running into problems with...

Anyway, any time I come across a page with an mpeg embedded, firefox crashes. No error message or warning, just all of the windows disappear.

It's been doing this for a while, since before I upgraded to 1.5, but the upgrade didn't fix it either. No other video formats crash it.

Any suggestions?

i'd guess it's the plugin that's associated with playing mpg that crashes it. maybe try mplayer classic.

I never installed any particular plugins for it. I assume it's just letting the normal windows media player plugin do it. It's not listed in my aboutlugins page, but neither is avi, and that works.

Is there a media player classic plugin for the browser? All I've got is the standalone player.

And none of the other plugins handle mpeg content? It might also be worth checking the download action for mpeg(Preferences, Downloads).

Download action is save-as.

As I said, avi works too, and it's not listed. The windows media player plugin has a * registered, so it might just decide to try to run anything else. Should I try giving mpegs to Quicktime (*shudder*) or something?

Any page with an embedded mpeg. I've tried on several, but this time I was testing on JEB's donkey link.

I do notice that if I have javascript blocked, it doesn't crash. But that's because it prevents the video from trying to play.

Firefox sucks when viewing what I think are mpegs, scroll a little, view another open window or whatever and the video turns blank.

Well that's what happens to me.

Viva le Quicktime.

That used to happen to me on some videos as well. Hasn't happened lately.

But the crashing still sucks.

if it only happens with mpg then my guess would be it's the mpg codec. so you could either update or change the codec you have.

it's strange though. how about these two links?

The first one opens with quicktime just fine.

The second gives me media player javascript errors. When I enable javascript, Firefox crashes.

it's not mpg then. it crashes whenever mplayer is embedded regardless of file format, apparently. maybe you could try updating mplayer.

Well, I updated the windows media player, I now get an runtime error message when Firefox crashes.

I'd love to replace the windows media player with a different plugin. While I have media player classic on my computer, it doesn't seem to have a browser plugin.

Any suggestions? Link please.

i was thinking maybe media player 10. if you already have that then i can't help you.

you can't replace it because it's not really a plugin, i think. mplayer is embedded into the webpage and even if it can be replaced i wouldn't know how.

Ah. I run Win2k, so Media Player 9 is the newest I can get.

Even so, it shouldn't be crashing the browser.

While we're discussing Firefox:

After upgrading to 1.5 Flash has pretty much stopped working. Often I'll get a blank screen, or I'll get just audio. What's my best course of action?

Classic symptom of not having Flash player 8

I made a site, then added to it using Flash 8, and then started getting complaints that the navigation buttons had disappeared, couldn't replicate the problem myself. Ended up having to build in a Flash Player version detector and then a html pop-up advising to get said player.
