This is the ASYLUM. Think about that word. It has divers meanings, but I'll give you a clue - look at the banners. This no haven of safety in a world of danger; this is where the crazies dwell. Yes, there are a good few sane, rational, moral people here. Be warned - they are not the keepers of the keys to this house of bedlam.

We even have a resident saint. That changes things not one iota, as he does not balance the resident demons. If you are looking for intelligent, civil discourse, it can occasionally be found here, but you'll wade thru chest-deep shit getting to it.

Here, I'll sum it up. One of the oldest traditions here, and in many forums, is "milepost" posts, usually at multples of 1K. Here we expect you to give kudos to Avondale (an artsy-fartsy south african kid living in Georgia) at the 999th posts, for no coherent reason. Our oldest member is 84, and greatly respected, for all that he was drug in by his faggot 40-something son. The youngest I couldn't say, but well under 20. Our resident "intellectuals" are a gay "gollege student" wanna-be movie critic and pretend political pundit, his former high school debate team (gay, gay, gay) teacher, who couldn't get laid with $10,000 and a pound of blow, an ex-pat Idawhore living in Japan as an ESL teacher pretending to be a college prof, an ex-pat Canadian (also residing in Japan) wrapped so tight about the evils of American politics as to be near explosion, an ex-pat Limey physicist who no one will hire to do physics, his brother, who has raised wastrelism to a low art, a former interrogator and trainer in interrogation technique who comes across as so bitter as to make alum look like attar of roses, and a few peripheral players.

We are in the midst of the Asylum's greatest tradition, the Annual Dumbfuck Tournament. It is a truly mind-boggling display of human stupidity at it's most blatant.

It is not too late, they haven't closed the gates solidly behind you - run!

We are indeed a diverse bunch here, Disconnect, but sometimes I think that our own weirdness plays too big a role in our collective self-image. I came because my brother was here, but I stayed for much the same reason that you came--because amongst the Christmas-based incest rape haiku threads and Dumbfuck Tournaments, there is material which makes me think. I learn something here every day, honestly.

Some of it I might have been better off not knowing, I suppose, but some of it is wonderful. Plus I think I've actually made a few friends. I hope you stick around for a while.

Very, very true. Relatively few of the clients I ever worked with received any counseling or assistance as children/adolescents to deal with the molestation they endured. There are no cures, just tools to manage with.
