My new system and a cry for help.
I just fried the processor in my old system, the clip popped loose on the heatsink and baked the processor. A very sad thing.
It was too much of a pain in the ass to replace all that I needed to replace and upgrade so I just bought a compaq 100gb. 3400+ sempron, 512mb system and have it up and running (apparently as I am posting this on it).
Here's my question.
I want all the stuff on my old HDs. The old computer had two, a 4 gig and a 20 gig.
There is so much shit in there that I want and/or need and I would just like to load it all on this new HD.
I know how to hook up the drives.
Suggestions?

Programs won't be transferrable (well, you could transfer installers if you have them, and run them again, but installed programs won't generally transfer)(so far as I can see). But otherwise, for data, you can slave the old drives to the new drive; just set the jumpers for slave and connect them to the IDE cables(s) and they'll appear with a nice spanking new drive letter in windows explorer, ready for plundering. Assuming that they still work.

This isn't really true. The only programs likely to not work after a straight copy are those that require the existance of specific registry keys(fairly rare, most software will automatically recreate any needed keys at startup) and those that install device drivers at install time(like the dongle stuff for Autocad and similar and the various CD protection technologies games come with). Standard applications should just work.

Oho, didn't know that (that the registry keys would be recreated). I only ever tried a couple of programs to check, and they didn't work, but that's good to know. He can just transfer the whole programs folder over, then, onto the new disk, click and run?

I should also add that I was recounting (with respect to the programs stuff) what our IT guy at work had told me. Should have asked googlemacker first.

i find that "smaller" programs (winamp, winrar, slsk) generally work just fine without reinstalling, but anything bigger (office, nero, photoshop) will not work. firefox and thunderbird will start up and work fine but your preferences/extensions/old email will not be there due to changed drive letters. this is also true for any program that stores files in the "common files" directory. even if it runs, things will be broken.
regardless, your best bet would be reinstalling any program from a setup cd/file.

Office has worked in the past for me(at least the newer versions on patched up XP machines), Nero is version dependant(sometimes it installs the ASPI layer in it's program folder, sometimes it installs it into the system32 folder or similar).
The problem used to be a lot worse in the Win9x days when every application seemed to want to install 50 DLL's along with itself. The NT 5 based OSes however have a much more complete base API that the need for extra DLL's was reduced.

It rarely works for me, and isn't something I would recommend, but fuck it, if it saves me from having to download all my old shit on the new computer, I will give it another go.

You Windows people seem to suck at actually doing anything with Windows.

I hate it when I do that.
So if I just plug the old HD into the harness it should show up in devices and I can call it up from there?

I would say that if you found all that stuff on the internerd to begin with then welcome to a whole new adventure....everything wiped clean..start over with a clean slate....like old school bankruptcy or being born again.

Yes, wonder. Plug it in and it will be the slave.
Double click on your Computer Icon and you'll see a new drive added. Click and your on your way.

You should set the jumpers to be slave. Presumably one of the old HDs is already set that way and the other is set to master and has to be changed.
I've never actually done that. The extra HDs I got were already set, I believe.

I just installed a 120gb hard drive about a month ago for all my pics.
All hard drives have 2 slots on them, 1 long multi pin and a small 4 pin slot.
Whichever harddrive has the 4 slot plugged in to it, is the master.
Seeing as his new computer is already hooked up to the master, all he has to do is plug in his harddrive (from his old comp) into the multi slotted plug on the jumper.
voila!
Go to the computer icon, see his added drive (mine was F), open, select all and transfer to C drive.
Unplug and hook up the next hardrive, repeat.
That is , as was said earlier, if it is still working and can be saved.
How you making out, wonder?

all harddrives, also, have a sticker on them explaining the pin mapping and how to set the jumpers for master/slave/cable select. it's really not that difficult.
don't listen to T, that made absolutely no sense at all.
if it's a seagate go here http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/d...r_settings.html

i'm glad you two are happy together but, you'll notice, that image does not actually have the jumper configuration settings.
