Help - I just installed a wifi bridge so I can get broadband upstairs without running wires up the stairs and so avoiding divorce.

However the resulting speed drop is awful - its only a little better than dial up - I have clocked 36kbps off a 2mbps broadband line.
And if i switch to the wire I get my 2megs right off.

The signal strength as measured by windows is "very good" so I have little worries about the radio signals. below is my observed speed drops - is this normal ? Where do i go from here?


laptop -> router - wire - 1900 kbps +
laptop -> router - wifi - 600 kbps +
laptop -> bridge -> router (wifi) - 40 kbps +

I have gone back to unencrypted plain vanilla wifi, changed channels to avoid interference, and firmware upgrades are my next hope. But shoudl I really see such awful drop offs?

Try fudging with your MTU settings. It's possible the bridge is fragmenting packets badly.

I bet it's the router's firewall or something. And even though windows detects good range,it still needs to go thru your floor. That alone can fucker things up.
I think you should turn off your firewall on your router so your neighbors can have internerd access too.
She has a laptop...so I guess wireless would be better so you can jerk off right over the toilet.
But you can still run a wire if all else fails,without running a wire up the stairs.
Get a long drill bit and a drill.
I should brush off those cobwebs. Yea.
Those wires go straight to the router,directly above where my beloved Mac is. That grey wire goes nowhere. I should remove that wire. Yea.

Not tried anything yet - will post back if it is interesting.

If I take a drill to the ceiling, she will probably take a drill to me. I'll try the MTU route I think :-)
