Technology Processer and browser speed

There's shtloads of difference between my iBook, G3 600mhz 640 ram running Panther, and a PC with an XP ( I gig or so mhz ) with 360 ram running win 2000 ( pro ).

Both are running by cable to the same router, and both are using Firefox 1.5

The PC is much much quicker.

My question is how much does a browser rely on processing power for speed? or is there another factor involved?

I have the feeling as if the iBook will never be up to speed ever again, no matter how fast my conection is.

Your thoughts........ *waits for the obligatory 'ditch the Mac' comment*

Page rendering is almost entirely CPU dependant.

bandwidthplace.com , do the speed test, if they return the same or similar speeds then it will be the speed at which the nic processes the traffic as well as how data is structured for transmission. Bus speed may also be a factor aswell as memory access, is something else winning the DMA to the memory or getting priority to the processor.
All manner of things could affect the apparent speed of your machines.

The PC got 861.8 kilobits per second, the iBook 1 megabits.

Frustrationg to have two machines that work at different speeds, especially since the primary use of the iBook was going to be for browsing.

Thanks you two, I take back all those nasty things I said about you.

2.8 Megabits/sec

That's just .2 under my max.
