When we installed CentOS at work I really liked how you could move from one desktop to another simply by scrolling the mouse to the edge of the screen. I thought this was the default behavior but when I installed CentOS at home (and later Kubuntu) this was not the case.

I don't even know where to begin searching for how to set this up...what do I need to look for?

Right-click the desktop, "Configure Desktop", "Multiple Desktops" tick the box for "Mouse wheel over desktop switches desktop". I think you do have to have desktop icons enabled for this to work though.

No, that's not the same behavior.

On my CentOS box at work, from desktop 1, if you just push the mouse "through" the right side of the screen you end up at #2. If you then push it through the bottom of the screen you go to 4.

Kind of assumes your desktops are in a square, but still...
