Use the gimp. It's powerful, does transparent images, available on most any platform and renders most any image type, and it's free.

and some fun tutorials:

In this case I took your image, opened it with gimp, selected the "Layer" menu (from the menus above your picture), selected "Transparency", selected "Add Alpha Channel". Channels are like color elements for a picture and by default they come with red, green and blue (unless your picture mode is greyscale). Alpha is transparent and isn't there by default most of the time. When you add it, then you can remove the color you want.
Select the eye dropper from the GIMP tools dialog and click on the color you want disappeared. By default it will set the foreground color of your paint palette to this color (in this case white).
Click on "Bucket fill" from the GIMP tools dialog. You will see a "Mode" drop down box and a couple of buttons marked "FG color fill" and "BG color fill". Make sure FG color fill is selected. Click on the "Mode" control. Select color erase. Click on whitey. (your background)
Voosh, most of the work is done. Use the magnifying glass to zoom in on any parts that ook funny and clean it up.
