KDE transparency issues

My desktop changes images every 10 minutes. The taskbar and menu bar are both set to be transparent, but when the desktop changes, they either retain the last background, or stop being transparent until I cycle through all the desktops.

Is there a workaround for this? Any ideas?

you could install xgl and get real transparancy (yes, as opposed to fake transparency in KDE (no, im not making this up))

you can find a bunch of how-to's on the ubuntu forums

Why would you use Xgl for true transparency when the composite extension in the normal X server already supports it?

Bleeding edge Ubuntu? That's like drag racing in a Reliant Regal.

I enabled the composite extensions. On an 866mhz with 256 whopping megs of ram, transparency on any window or widget bogs my shit right the fuck down.

I imagine this is the sort of thing best handled by the video card, but I get the impression that it is being handled by software. Am I thinking correctly?

If the composite extension is supported by your video cards drivers(AFAIK only Nvidia and possibly ATI currently) then it's done in hardware. Otherwise software rendering is used.
