Streaming video, what is it?

If I put a .wmv, or .mov or a flash movie on a server, someone opens it up, Real Player or whatever buffers and plays it.

So that's streaming video or not? Is there something better out there? Surely it's all down to connection speeds.

True streaming video has no fixed length and will, in some cases, adjust the bitrate on the fly depending on the remote client. There's also secondary stuff like streaming video tends not to include a true seek track, generally isn't savable locally by the remote client and is usually served up using a protocol other than HTTP(ie. RTSP/RTP).

In your example, a normal video is being *treated* as streaming video, rather than being a video stream.

VLC does streaming I believe.

go to open file and click network. Play with it and tell me what it does (never done it myself)

Usually none except possibly in stream responsiveness.

And the VLC streaming is generally for dealing with the mms:// stuff and/or it's own built in streaming(you can get VLC to stream a DVD over the network to another PC for example).
