Good title.
Im not sure how a gathering like that could be at all serious though.

It's an academic conference. There are a number of people who have put some serious scholarly effort into literary and social analysis of the Harry Potter books, fan culture, and such.
That said, I suspect there will be a significant amount of frivolity. Honestly, most of the academic conferences I have been to involve some goofiness, this one will probably just be more so.

Your abstract is kind of weird. Is it an assignment designed to familierise you or the general public you present it to with some genetic principles?

I'm not sure I understand the question. I'll be presenting some genetic models of how wizarding ability might be inherited (the current proposals do not explain some aspects of inheritance), and exploring the impact of social attitudes toward the genetic future of the wizarding population. The poster will have to do some basic familiarization of the viewer with Mendelian genetics, as I don't think I can assume such knowledge at this conference.

The appeal of science fiction/fantasy is to have some grounding in actual science.

To the best of my knowledge, I am the only science-oriented presentation at the conference. But I agree with you that exploring the scientific bases of science fiction and fantasy can be a lot of fun.

I have three four-shelf bookcases full of RPG material. I may be a nerd.

Closest bookcase is TSR's 1st and 2nd edition AD&D. Bookcase just on other side of the guitar is Star Trek, Shadowrun, Battletech (all by FASA), WEG's Star Wars (1st and 2nd editions), Dungeon and Dragon magazines, some other stuff. Last bookcase is Rolemaster (RM2 and RMSS), MERP, Spacemaster (all by ICE) and Chaosium's Runequest 3rd Edition. Some White Dwarf's in those first two bookcases.
There's a bunch of other stuff in boxes somewhere. Some more White Dwarfs and a bunch of Magic:The Gathering cards. I'll find them soon enough.

So, the bookcases aren't huge. But that's many thousands of dollars spent by my brother and I to get that much stuff.
It's always embarassing mentioning this lot on insurance forms.
The MERP set is nearly complete, just a few titles outstanding (most notably The Shire) and I have all of RM2 apart from Creatures and Treasures III, including the genre books. If anyone has C&T III, sell it to me.

Oh, there's some Advanced Marvel Superheroes material (the TSR game from the 80s, that is) that I just bought.

Mysteriously, most people just think that it's sad.

Nah. Geeks will role-play the salvation of the planet, but their dice will amazingly be ineffective when applied to the world at large.

The rolling of the dice dice will eventually shift the very Earth on its axis, ushering in an age of awkward peace.

You are some seriously sick bastards.
But you don't own an original edition of the least well-organized RPG of all time, "Teenagers From Outer Space". Unlike someone I could mention.
