I'm trying to help someone do some basic installations on their hosted space and need an ssh client for windows. The hosting recommends Putty and has a walkthrough on how to use it (with screenshots!), but he's having trouble with it. Namely, it will login and then crash/ close. He's tried it on his desktop and laptop to the same effect. As far as I know, he is using the basic XP .exe from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~...y/download.html

Any recommendations beyond this or any ideas what might be happening or what can be done to avoid it? All he needs to do is run some basic commands to install the Gallery2 software.

Only aternative I can think of that doesn't require also installing Cygwin is TTSSH2.

Can't vouch for it much, as the only time I use TeraTerm is for consoling onto a machine using a serial connection.

http://www.vandyke.com/products/securecrt/ is a possibility - i prefer PuTTY tho

Any ideas on why Putty wouldn't be playing nice? Hard to diagnose from the intel I gave you, I know.

No, but I'd be inclined to blame his PC. I've had PuTTY crash on me all of twice I think and this is across multiple platforms(from Windows 98 all the way up to Windows XP).

try running it from a windows command shell. make sure he's running the ssh client and not the scp client or whatnot, which are commandline only.
