right...badness

last night, i moved a bunch of furniture and such. not a problem, that. but in the process, i also moved my desktop about 5 feet. i don't think i jarred anything, and i unplugged everything first, but now it won't boot. press the power button, and i get the splashscreen on the bios. won't post. doesn't even try, actually. i plan to get inside the box this afternoon after work, to see if anything may be loose in its slot or whatever, but....any ideas?

again, for clarity:

on powerup, the stupid white screen with first international computing's logo on it comes up, and doesn't go away like it should.

one of the dvd drives' seek light comes on and stays steady.

all fans appear to be functioning.

everything is plugged in properly on the back side of the box.

.......ideas?

Microsoft has really started to tighten the licensing on their products, the built-in GPS has detected an unauthorised move and you will have to buy a new copy of the OS as well as attending a 25 day MCP training regiment.

FedEx skalie a wet-slap, it may not help your PC issue but it will make you feel a great deal better.

My guess would be that the drive is screwed. Or badly connected.

Yeah, check the HD connection first thing, or check the BIOS is recognising the HD is there.

press tab or escape and see what bios says. if it says "no os found" then hd has probably been disconnected.

i got the case open, and blew/vacuumed a bunch of dust out, checked the connection on various everything. check all the connections. put it all back together, crossed my fingers, and hit the button. same thing. crap.

then i stopped to think what was different and recent, which led me to unplug the external hard drive. bada-bing-bang-BOOT! why the fuck would an object on the usb bus keep the machine from coming up? i don't know.

No idea, mine has never done that.

Then again, I'm more likely to plug it into the pocket pc these days anyways.

I have had issues with this with Linux before. Required some monkeying about which I don't remember (I should start keeping a notebook). Just saying, it's possible. Stupid, but possible.

Did you actually go into the BIOS and check to see that the BIOS was picking up all drives, cpu, memory, etc.?

It's USB legacy support that caused an issue for me, SLH, which I fixed in the BIOS. In my case, it was the keyboard that wasn't working (machine was a Dell and I was installing Fedora Core 2).
