I was reading a while back that in the low-end server market, AMD will have the advantage for at least another 6+ months. Which is relevant to what we might buy, here.

Were those Poweredge 850s, or something a little older, that you're getting rid of?

We're also looking at maybe leasing, depending on how it works out, pricewise.

Anyone have a chance to fuck around with Sun's new Niagara platform? The Ultrasparc T1, T1000/T2000 servers?

No, Poweredge 2850's. Im still going to be "using" them perse' [sic], but they wont be handling our NS2/MATLAB simulations anymore. However, in comparison with DELL, I purchased the SUN machines for about $5000 each with the following specs:

2 Dual Core 2.2 GHz AMD Opteron Procs
8 Gigs DDR 3200
2 73 Gig 10k RPM SAS Drives
ILOM
4 10/100/1000 NICS
Plus 3 year warranty and hardware support

DELLs comparable price was about $8000+ for the same thing [no AMD ]

If your even thinking about HP, I would re-asses your entire architecture.

Why? We have 2 HP blade cabinets here and have no complaints. And I'd say about 40% of normal servers are HP as well. Again, no complaints.

Aren't HP completely migrating to Itanic (as the register, at least, call Itanium)?

Considering HP make more than just servers, I'm guessing not.

Itanium is an upgrade path for old PA-RISC and Alpha machines sold by HP and Digital(later bought by Compaq who were then bought by HP), which are the only product lines they plan to replace.

I meant their servers migrating to Itanium.

I dont know about what they are doing in Europe, but we had 20 HP blades, and they all ran hot, would shutdown for thermal issues cause of exploding capacitors, and we would have to fight with support to get the mobo's replaced. Needless, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

But yeah, it wouldn't make sense to migrate all their server products to Itanium.

Hmmm, HP are expecting 75% of their server sales to be Itanium-based servers, they say, by the end of this year.

You sure they aren't talking about enterprise stuff? Or migrating 75% of their current PA-RISC customers to the Integrity(Itanium based) platform by the end of the year?

Well, from what I've read on the register, they appear to be really into itanium and also the majority of the market.

http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2006/03/21/1477145.htm was where I got the 75% figure, but that might be bullshit (or else only for 'business critical' machines or for customers in the Americas, don't know). If the 75% figure were true, HP would appear to be betting their future as a server vendor on an inside straight, so it could well be untrue.

I suspect it's just bad reporting. HP's x86 product line is huge and I've not heard anything about them getting rid of it in the near future. The Itanium 2 was designed as a replacement for PA-RISC and Alpha, and the current revisions do a fairly good job of doing so. However, they just aren't priced to be usable in the low-end and midrange server markets(The lowest end Itanium 2 is $500 more than the lowest end Xeon).

From what I've been reading, the Opterons kill them at the lower end, too.

SUN is sending my brother a T-1000 to "Test out and write a review on" as HE has become a active and accepted member in contributing to SUN DOCS community. Will post more when it arrives. Apparently if SUN agrees with the write ups, or something along those lines, they let you keep the product. Nifty.

Colleague of mine has gotten a SUN machine to play with and report on, same sort of deal. I don't think that he'd want it if they offered it to him, but that's not surprising, given that he was testing its ability to do lots of maths (at which it blows).

Where people in the field might start wanting machines like that, maybe, is for high performance webservers, given the movement towards providing access to the observational data. We're going to have a petabyte of raw data (probably be kept in flat files) that is to be available to the community, and maybe 100 TB of processed data in a SQL database, and the querying and retrieval of that data is going to be mediated by the webservers (be interesting to see how this goes, because this is all going to be available on a 10 Gb pipe). I haven't played around with it all enough to see how it's going to behave when we're closer to completion (we're not at 10% yet).

Ohh yea, hes now working for GMAC Web Ops Group, doing Weblogic. He was telling me their web farm is massive. All brand new SUN stuff as GMAC is a "production testing center" for SUN. Nice.
