Apple enabling Windows XP on Mac hardware
From here:
quote: SAN JOSE, Calif. - Apple Computer Inc. unveiled software Wednesday to help owners of its new Intel-based Macs run Microsoft Corp.'s rival
Windows XP operating system, despite the computer maker's insistence it won't assist such efforts.
Apple's new "Boot Camp" software, a "beta" test version available as a free download, lets computer users with a Windows XP installation disk load that system on the Mac.
Apple shares rose nearly 8 percent in midday trading.
"It makes the Mac the most versatile computer on the market," said Tim Bajarin, a tech industry consultant at Creative Strategies.
Bajarin said the move should lure Windows users who "had their eye on a Mac but knew they could not run their favorite Windows programs on an Apple-based computer."
When Apple introduced its first computer based on Intel Corp. chips in January, the company said it had no intention of selling or supporting Windows on its machines, though it has not done anything to preclude people from doing it themselves.
Apple said Wednesday that stance remains true, yet the new software will ease Windows installation "by providing a simple graphical step-by-step assistant application."
snip
The Boot Camp software makes it easier to install Windows and lets users run either Mac
OS X or Windows when they restart their computer.
Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore said in a research note that Apple is likely to grow its worldwide market share beyond the current range of 3 percent to 4 percent, while American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu described the announcement as a "significant game changer."
A final version of Boot Camp will be available as a feature in the upcoming Mac OS X version 10.5, code-named "Leopard." Apple said it will preview Leopard in August, but it hasn't yet disclosed a release date or price for the upgrade.
Big news.
Myself, I think the superiority of Mac OS vs. Windows is much greater than Mac vs PC hardware, but I suppose that Apple is more reluctant to lose its hardware profits by selling Mac OS for PC hardware.
My guess would be that this won't get a lot of gamers, since a lot of them like to tweak their hardware.
Probably lethal for the Mac OS porting market?

The OS is very popular with people in this building. Indeed, it's the main reason that people here have bought so many macs (as opposed to buying macs because they love the smooth lines and indefinable cool).

I generally love Apple's design, but indeed, it is their OS that makes me a loyalist. Some of my troubles with Windows are undoubtedly due to unfamiliarity, but the Mac OS is such a perfect match for my needs that there is no comparison.

OSX is pretty good. Not for *nix purists like macker, who disdain GUIs and like searching for drivers or writing their own, but for normal people.

I like OSX because it has elements of both. Sweet GUI shell for most stuff, meaty UNIX goodness inside for the real work.

i don't doubt for a second that os x is pretty good but if you want to make the argument about what is good for normal people you just need to look at the market share.

this makes the mac mini more interesting for me. (as a quiet media server & skype connection)
my biggest priority is creating a computer environment@home with NO audible fan noise without breaking the bank, everything else is of secondary importance
cheers

I've been thinking about this, and this does, actually, make it more likely that I'd buy a mac next time around.
I don't understand why fan noise bothers you so much. But isn't watercooling the way to go, in that case? I seem to recall that macker has a watercooled machine at home.

I am enthusiastic about the idea of laptop processors (lower power consumption, less noise) in a desktop, always on environment.
I never play high-power 3d games anyway, so the integrated intel graphics suit my needs just fine. Sound cards are more of an issue... but I already fixed that by having bought a top-of-the-line home studio bundle that I can move around with impunity.
I hate fan noise because I tend to have computers in living/eating and sleeping areas. and I crave tranquility.
If a laptop is noisy, it is disqualified from being bought by me regardless of price, specs, etc.
I'm just a hippy, I guess... a goddamn hippy.

pc noise is the devil. i bought a new cpu fan and an extra quiet psu but it's still too loud. i wonder how apple manages to make them so quiet. they really do an excellent job there.
is water cooling really the only way to have a silent pc? i'd also be interested to know how safe water cooling is as i have a bit of an isssue with having water run through my pc.

I think that the water cooling apparatus is pretty leak-proof.
I wonder if people use oil cooling, too.
There is, apparently, a new samsung laptop which has flash memory instead of an HD, and is supposed to be pretty quiet. However, it doesn't have that big a flash HD and is, I gather, pretty expensive.

Now we'll finally be able to combine the security and ease of use of Windows with the flexibility and low cost of Apple hardware!

Water cooling isn't silent, it is quiet, but you still have the noise of the pump, and the large fans you use to cool the (radiators)
I've never found apple hardware to be particularly quiet, my full tower at home is much quieter than any of the apple machines at work.
