Stuff I learned this weekend
I wised up and began keeping a notebook of everything I do involving my linux boxen.
This way I can A) track down exactly what I did wrong when I screw something up, and B) make reloading the system faster as I will have a record of what I did right (which I will admit is a much shorter list).
This weekend I learned that removing CUPS in CENTOS4 will blow away gnome, apparently because they have shared dependencies.
I would have thought that if two packages have the same dependencies, then removing one would not remove the dependency--because other packages are using it. Is this not so?
I also finally got Samba up and running almost exactly how I want it. There are four folders--"music," "video," "files," and "incoming" that my roommates can browse. Everyone uses the same "smbuser" samba account that I set up. I had to set up the username and password on each remote (windows) machine manually, but the Linux box surfs over there without requiring it.
What's left to do is limit the size of the writeable folder--"incoming"--to about 4 gigs so my roommates don't drop a whole bunch of shit into it.
I also was unable to get my POS dell all-in-wonder to work as a network printer. It prints fine from the local box using Lexmark's drivers (as it is just a rebranded Lexmark), but this doesn't work if you use Lexmark's (or Dell's) drivers on the remote box. I had assumed that the print server would merely relay information to the printer for the clients, but apparently this is not the case.
So this week I have some more reading up on Samba and CUPS to do. Ordered a 320gb hard drive from newegg which should arrive this week--supposedly CENTOS uses Raid 0 (whatever that is) so if I install the drive and format it I will just have "more space." Well, we'll see. I don't know anything about RAID so I guess that's the next topic to study.
