I applied for a refund of a small amount of retirement money from the state eight months ago. I called about seven months ago and they said they'd never received my application, and I never heard from them again. A few weeks ago, I got fed up and FAXd them the same application I mailed them eight months ago. When I called, yesterday, to see what the hold-up was (I should have received the refund within 90 days of my initial application), I was told that they had received my application eight months ago, and received the application I FAXd them a few weeks ago, but it would take 90 days to process my application.
But, I said, it's been EIGHT MONTHS and you should have send me a check five months ago.
Oh, but, they determined several months ago that you are still working for the state.
I stopped working for the state in June of last year, and they sent you documentation.
Oh, well, I can't speak to what happened eight months ago, but it will take 90 days to process your application. You'll receive a statement from us if we need further information and to let you know the status of your application.
Really? I never received anything previously and it has been eight months. In fact, eight months ago, I was told you'd never even received my application. Now I find out you did and nothing happened for eight months. Is there someone I can contact who works for the state to ensure that you get the proper documentation?
I'm sorry. It's going to take up to 90 days to process your application. We'll let you know the status once your application has been processed.
Oh, so I'm just supposed to trust that now you're going to do correctly what you were too incompetent to do eight months ago?
Sadly, it really did go like that. I'm usually really careful not to show anger or frustration and take it out on some phone lackey, especially when it's not that person's fault that someone else was incompetent, but I was having a bad day and I was mad and the woman was completely unhelpful. Very stupid on my part. It will probably take another eight months for me to hear anything and I won't get my money. Though, I did call the University of Oregon (PAYROLL OFFICE!!) and the woman there told me I wasn't the only one having this problem, and that she would call in some favors to make sure my refund gets sent to me.
*sigh*
