I don't think it's too much of a stretch to note that Ahmadi-Nejad chose the president's fundamentalism as the grounds on which to approach him. The two speak a common language, in some sense, and Nejad's rather rational decision to appeal to apocalyptic radical imagery (biblical imagary at that, that the president purportedly subscribes to) and the failures of all governing principles (including, government) besides the divine perhaps speaks more to our own creepiness than his.

That passage you quoted, and many others, doesn't sound substantially different than your average soundbyte from James Dobson, Tom Delay, Rick Santorum, and Bush himself.

It is similar, and not by accident certainly. Both the Iranian president and our own are well-versed in the language of religious fundamentalism and apocolyptic biblicalism (or whatever). The religious beliefs that Ahmadi-Nejad attributes to Bush (PBUH) are indeed Bush's--this isn't a loony far-reaching appeal totally misrepresenting the kind of religious views Bush would have any truck with, it is a quite rational rhetorical move on his part noting that they both come from a pretty similar place, spiritually (that part is certainly debatable in practice, but in theory anyway he's right).

As far as religious fascism and the rhetoric of that letter goes, take some time with some of America's religious leaders and look at what kind of rhetoric they put out. Dobson, Robertson, DeLay, Santorum, yadda yadda yadda....these aren't "out there" kooks of minimal importance, but some of the biggest political movers and shakers in our country (and indeed, represent a significant side of our president and his ruling authority).

It's easy to find differences between the Iranian president and our own; I'm just pointing out that there is a similarity or two, as well. No need to paper tiger that.

Hitler's mistreament of intellectuals was hardly because they had anything to do with his rise to power. Hitler was a populist rabblerouser with a nice simple message and a few groups to rail against and then victimise (communists, jews, homosekshuals, most intellectuals).
