Please, anyone with a brain knows that whining about immigrants not paying taxes really translates as 'They aren't paying as much as me, so I'm gonna cry about it'

And as for the really low wage ones, they would not only NOT pay (income)taxes, they'd probably get money back from the government anyways. then again, if they were paying taxes, they'd be citizens and therefore not be so low paid.

I met a Cuban woman who lives on my floor on Tuesday in the elevator.
She thought my Chinese roommate was Latino and just started talking (I made the same mistake).

I dunno if it's so much about taxes and ss as it is about the huge chunk of their money that they send outta the country every year. and most of em, down here at least, aren't lookin to be legal citizens at all. they wanna work up here and send the money home so they can live in high cotton down there when they're done. that's at least been the case with every one of em that I've known - which has been a fairly large number - and they make no bones about it at all. can't see as how I blame em in that regard, so long as they can get away with it, but it don't make it right.

and the illegals I've known personally weren't working for shit pay. they were tradesmen who made about what I would make if I were to do drywall or painting or any number of other construction trades. the DMN (Drunk Mexican Neighbors) at Savannah Heights apartments lived eight to a one-bedroom apartment and sent more than half their money home to Toluca, Mexico. They missed Mexico and talked about it all the time, and none of em had intentions to move here permanently. Same goes for the Guatemalans upstairs.

Illegals in NJ were doing the shit-paid job. Busboys, landscapers, carwashers, etc or, at least, those jobs were nearly all done by Mexicans. If some were doing, say, drywalling, I could understand that too, of course, because even finding a contractor in NJ willing to come and do your work is like getting blood from a stone, as TT will confirm.

In my experience the Mexicans do send half their income home, and may intend to return. (I wish it were easier for them to go back).
NY has few Mexicans: they are all from two cities: 1960-1990 they were all from Puebla (poblanos); since then they're all from Neza (Nezahualcóyotl, a suburb of the capital).
The Colombians, however, are mostly gay, their homeland has been in a civil war for all their lives, and they have no intention whatsoever of ever living there again.

People making that little money would'nt owe income tax anyways. They do, however, pay sales tax, property tax, fuel tax, etc., as has been pointed out before. If they were legal they would probably get a big income tax refund.

These guys are making $10-15/hour or so working at contractors as a minimum. They send their money home to Toluca and return there every so often. They told me they planned to move home after a time and live high on the hog from what they made up here. Like I say, I don't blame em a bit, but my empathy doesn't make it right. There are more like them in the DFW area than there are peasant lettuce pickers or busboys. We don't have an immigration problem in north Texas; we have an illegal worker issue.
