In 1898 the US Government imposed a tax on telephone calls billed according to distance and duration to finance the Spanish-American War. The tax was set at 3%, and for the last 108 years the American public and private buisnesses have been paying it.

On July 31 this tax will be finally repealed, and consumers next year can also obtain a refund of taxes paid since March 2003, with interest, by asking for the money back through their 2006 tax returns.
