Family Professions

I only know what my family did for a living about 4 or 5 generations back, and not all of them then. Here's a partial list (nothing very exciting, I am afraid):

Teacher
IT project manager
Window cleaner
Sales manager
Mechanic
Police officer (CI)
Civil Servant
Traindriver (steam trains in the UK and Africa)
Tailor
Clerk (x3 at least)
Milliner
Electrical Engineer
BBC manager-type
Life Insurance manager-type
Merchant Navy

WW2:
Sapper
Naval gunner (DEMS, on Merchant Ships)
Commando

WW1:
Artillery spotter
Artilleryman
Merchant Navy
?

It's sort of interesting to me to see what they did, how many different things. I was the first person in my family to get a degree, but they did relatively OK for themselves; one side of my family are what would be called 'blue collar' and the others were artisans (like my great-grandfather the tailor); not sure if that's Lower Middle Class or Upper Lower Class. So, what'd your family do?

My grandmother went from well-to-do kept woman to delivering ice after the commies came. Ouch.

Most of my family is as boring as all of yours. I do have a great grandfather who was a bootlegger by profession. That's about as good as it gets.

One member of my family was a carnie for a while.

Going back further, some portion of my ancestors were allegedly thieving gypsy bastards.

Oh, yes, I had a cousin who was with the carnival and was killed in an auto accident while traveling with the carnie. Forgot about her.

No gypsies, though.

It would be fun working with the carnival and always be travaling. But I'm sure it would get tired after awhile. I hate traveling as much as I do now. But it would be neat to see all the people having fun. We don't get any carnivals around here.

Both my Mother and father come from groups of 8-10 siblings, as did my grandparents. I have no way in hell of keeping track of all that (I have more than 60 cousins). All I can say for sure that before my generation everyone was either a farmer, fisherman, craftsman of some ilk or a pauping backroom musician. My parents generation was the first to break free of the proletariat/lower middle class... but only a couple (including my pa) has hit the top income bracket. My generation has quite the socioeconomic spread from semi-skilled laborer to corporate top management. I suspect I will become a disgruntled burger-flipping academic, but who knows.

Cheers
-m

Interestingly enough (or not) my maternal grandfather's family (Jensen) was from Denmark. He came across the big pond when he was 2. My maternal grandmother's side of the family were Martindales. They were the booze runners and general heathens in the area. From what my mom's geneology tells us, they followed the mormons across the country supplying them with the wicked, wicked ways.

My dad's side of the family is kind of muttly but my ancestry on that side is English.

You forgot salesmen, sheriff's deputy, hydraulic systems engineer, inventor/entrepeneur (invented the Cool-Cushion), titty-bar dancer/porno film actress, truckdrivers, career submariner (executive officer of the world's first nuclear sub (the Nautilus)), Medal of Honor recipient, land developer and participant in the OK land rush, Confederate general/lawyer, and most importantly, the family founder - an Irishman transported for crimes against the crown (he was a hedge teacher working to keep Gaelic alive while the english tried to eradicate it) who subsequently absconded with two confederates into the Great Smoky Mountains and was never apprehended.

My mother's side, the dirty mexicans:

Bookkeeper, interior designer, homemaker – my mom.
Homemakers - all of the women. Only my mother and one aunt made out really well.
In jail for manslaughter - my mother's twin brother. I don't even remember what he did before this. The man he killed was apparently related to someone important, and this will likely be his profession for the rest of his life.
Construction company manager or something - uncle.
Laborer, pro pool player, drunk - My abuelo.
Undercover agent for the Border Patrol - My mom's cousin, my “uncle” Joe.

My father’s side, the dirty french:

CPA – my father.
Builder, terrible author – my grandfather.
Homemakers – the women.
Businessman – uncle. No idea what he does specifically, but he’s been successful at it.
Pilot – cousin
Makes wedding cake toppers – my cousins’ wife.
Works for the Library of Congress – cousin. She also worked down in Chile for a few years, teaching I believe.
