I accidently paid my rent to the wrong address using internet banking.

Which was stupid.

What was even more stupid, that address is in Belgium.

So I talk to my bank, they have asked the third party nicely if they will pay me back, 99.9% of the time that happens, they said.

So I asked, what's the next step if I don't see my money back?

Well I get the details of the person and can ask that person myself, as it's my own silly fault, the bank can't just withdraw money from that person's account.

Next step, if that person declines to pay me back? (I was expecting to have to talk to a lawyer)

"Go to the police and report a theft"

"What?"

Apparently as that person knows that that money wasn't meant for them I can report the thing as affair as a theft.

Wierdness.

What does paying via the Internet have to do with paying the wrong people? I pay pretty much everything via the web and it seems to me that it would take a fair amount of effort to make such a fuck up.
