Ok so i'm installing Fedora Core, full format/install. I've done this before with no problems but this time it's being a bitch. After the 2 hour installation process the machine reboots to LI_ and is stuck. The thing is Fedora is supposed to install GRUB, not Lilo. I go through the installation again paying closer attention this time, thinking I missed something the first time, with the same end result.

This drive previously had an old version of RedHat on it, like v7, which I think used Lilo. Is it possibly remnants of that are screwing up the new install? Why is it still there after a format and fresh install? How the hell do I get rid of it?

Are you telling Fedora to install Grub into the MBR or onto the first primary partition? Installing it into the MBR *should* get rid of LILO.

Alternatively, you could get rid of it manually with something like:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

(run from a rescue CD and /dev/hda to be replaced with whatever device your primary hard disk is)

You can then either just do a full reinstall again or, if your Linux commandline kung fu is strong, chroot into the old install and manually run grub again.

or boot from a windows rescue cd (boot disk): fdisk /mbr

i got it working, ended up just swapping out the drive and installing it on a different one.

Also, GRUB has a long standing problem installing to the mbr of a NTFS drive, see here:

Linux Rescue CD:

> chroot /mnt/sysimage
> grub
grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

That will install grub into the MBR of the first hard disk, with a GRUB root on the first partition of the second hard disk in the system. Which wouldn't work all that well if the machine only has one hard disk.

Anything would be better than a OS that can be backdoored by a six year old.

Not to mention the architectual flaws the NT platform turns up once a month usually to virus authors.

Need I mention the company holding to secrets to NT have a documented contract with americans spy agency(NSA)?

In the end though BSD is the almighty ruler of operating systems. If NT's owning corporation would quit whoring out hardware manufacturers making them use propriatary firmware we could put them aside already.
