Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Aqvavit

Swedish police scupper Piratebay
Raid unleashes torrent of abuse
By Lars-Göran NilssonPublished Wednesday 31st May 2006 15:22

Swedish police raided 10 different locations in Sweden and seized servers in a massive crackdown on torrent site Piratebay.org today.

Reports from a wide range of online Swedish news sources claim that up to 50 police officers were involved in the raids in Stockholm, Gothenburg and several other locations around the country. Computer equipment from homes and workplaces of three people involved with Piratebay - aged 22, 24 and 28 - has also been seized to further help the investigation.

Swedish Antipiracy Bureau’s spokesman Henrik Ponten - which represents the music and movie industry in Sweden - applauded the police for finally targeting large scale piracy organisations such as Piratebay.

The Antipiracy Bureau is allegedly also the organisation behind the police raids.

It is unclear if Piratebay has breached the Swedish copyright laws and the charges so far consist of crimes against copyright laws and aiding crimes against copyright laws. Usually, Swedish police would not have got involved in such a direct fashion when it comes to copyright crimes in Sweden due to the relatively low charges involved, which would only merit fines.

There are claimed to be at least one million file sharers in Sweden and it would be impossible for the police to charge every one for copyright theft.

The recently formed Pirat Partiet (the Pirate Party) – www.piratpartiet.se – is up in arms about the raid. Pirat Partiet is actively promoting more open and consumer friendly copyright laws and is running for government in the 2006 elections. Todays raids on Piratebay are likely to promote them further.

The Swedish police have allegedly also closed down the Pirat Byrån website, an organisation that promotes piracy and happens to have its servers located at the same site as Piratebay. It is unclear if this is actually the case, but at the time of writing Pirat Byrån's website was unavailable.

Judging from posts on several of the large Swedish newspaper forums, many people are outraged over the raid, not because the Piratebay was closed down, but because of the waste of taxpayers money and police time, when there are other more important crimes to solve.

According to a post on Slyck.com, one of the members of Piratebay has sworn that they will be back, even if they have to host the servers outside of Sweden.

Update
As of 16.30BST, piratebay.org was live again, though the site currently consists of a single page detailing the raid.

The Pirate Bay is probably the largest open bit torrent file sharing site on the internet.

As of yesterday the Swedish police home page is down and seems to have serious problems getting it back up again. Also, the pirate bay sends their wishes through multiple articles that they have bought new servers and will be up and running in one or two days.

As the police came to confiscate the servers they also took a bunch of other stuff plus other companies servers that had nothing to do with the matter, making people angry not knowing what the hell they were doing in the first place.

This will just make a big big stink in the papers for a while, let the Swedish politicians stretch their power and let people think they actually have a say in the matter. Later on the actual trials and courtdates will be pushed into the future and once again ... lots of money will have been spent for absolutely nothing.

Oh and it was never the Antipiracybureu that set this whole thing off. It was actually the US.

And well, like many European countries, Swedes aren't very happy when big brother puts its foot down and every minister in Sweden starts to dance.

So, elect some politicians with the balls to tell the US too fuck off, or quit complaining.

Simon, if you think it's that easy then you're naive.

And I wasn't complaining, I actually don't care about this situation. I've never visited the sites and never wanted to.

I'm just telling you what the Swedish papers are saying and what some Swedes are reacting to.

We don't have that many politicians to choose from that would say anything to the US. And the ones that would .. are nationalsocialists.

The newspapers are already writing about more serious stuff than this pirate business.

For example they're happy about the new brand of jeans that will be sold by our lovely H&M. They're called fit sliq and will be the hottest thing in Sweden.

The only problem is that the English jeans name fit sliq means "pussy lick" in Swedish.

I'll buy them.

Yeah, I read that. Took me a moment to realise what the uproar was about as Swedish isn't my first language. When it clicked I sent Redbull out of my nose because of my laughter.

As with the bulk of the Swedish people, most Americans (and most large businesses here) could give a fuck about TPB.

The music and film industries here are the exception. I'm sure some of them are still whining about how much money VCR's and cassette recorders cost them.

I'm sure they manage to exert some pressure on the government here, but not near as much as they wish.

If the Swedish government is dancing to anyone else's tune, it's most likely Mickey Mouse.

The recording industry and the movie industry have had some pretty big effects on US government policy, I would say. Copyright extensions and the DMCA would appear to be pretty significant to me.

If they had as much as they wish they had, that raid would have occurred here in the US in multiple locations and on a much grander scale.
I suspect they have to pick and choose which issues to push and go where the money really is.
Which according to the instances you cite is royalty money, not CD and movie sales.

From http://thepiratebay.org/

quote:
The necessity for securing technical evidence for the existance of a web-service which is fully official, the legality of which has been under public debate for years and whose principals are public persons giving regular press interviews, could not be explained. Asked for other reasoning behind the choice to take down a site, without knowing wether it is illegal or not, the officers explained that this is normal.

Soo, would anyone else like to venture a guess of why it was necessary?

YARR! Swedish police site broadsided after Pirate Bay raid

6/2/2006 8:45:00 AM, by Eric Bangeman

It looks like the raid on The Pirate Bay and confiscation of its servers upset somebody. That's one conclusion to be drawn from the sudden unavailability of the web site of Sweden's national police. Beginning last night, the the site came under a widespread and intense denial of service attack, according to National Police Administration Director Lars Lindahl.

"Our homepage had to handle 500,000 visits per second and it's obviously not going to handle that. It's sort of like 10,000 people calling the same phone switch at once."

According to Lindahl, the attack began at 9:30pm local time. Judging by the time it's taking to load polisen.se, the attack seems to be still going on in full force, despite assurances that the site would be back up by now. The Swedish police are investigating the origin of the attack.

Warner Music and Sony's web sites were also attacked, but in this case, a single Turkish hacker is thought to be responsible. It's doubtful that the hack is related to the DoS broadside against the Swedish police, although the timing is interesting.

The Pirate Bay is arguably the largest and most popular torrent site in the world, and news of the raid was met with great dismay by fans of the site. Piratpartiet, a Swedish political party affiliated with a view on copyright very similar to The Pirate Bay, has called the raid illegal. They have also accused the Swedish government of responding to pressure from American media companies, a concern shared by others in the country.

"We want to find out whether pressure from the
