MythTV WHUT WHUT

My PVR-150 arrived from eBay today. I found a pretty good (I think) set of instructions for setting up Myth on Fedora Core which are probably not <i>too</i> different from CentOS (CentOS being just an un-branded RHEL clone).

I am still at that giddy, happy, "I get to play with new technology" stage. I have just cracked a beer and I am watching yum install umpty-squat Myth-related packages from Dag and ATRPMs.

I figure I have at least an hour before I realize I have not only failed to set up myth, but have also somehow fucked up my entire installation and then, shitfaced, bang my head against the desk. I mean, let's be honest: this is a guy who cannot get FUCKING CUPS to work.

So, cross your fingers and toes and, in the case of Sabine, tentacles. Danke!

Problem #1:
The tutorial says to enable freshrpms and run a yum update. After updating from Dag and ATRPMs, I get

There was a problem importing one of the Python modules
required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:

No module named cElementTree

Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.

It's possible that the above module doesn't match the
current version of Python, which is:
2.4.1 (#1, Jun 20 2005, 22:41:40)
[GCC 3.4.3 20050227 (Red Hat 3.4.3-22.1)]

If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:
http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq

[root@localhost yum.repos.d]# yum

...So yum at some point installed something that broke yum.
I was under the impression that yum and other package managers were designed <i>specifically to prevent this from happening.</i> Now I understand why so many people claim that the yum developers fail at the internet and I should use apt.

Going to go see if I can fix this...

As it turns out, you need to enable the kbs-extras-Centos repo as well as dag and atrpms to get myth to install.

One thing that is not quite clear to me--how does myth change the channel on the set-top box or TV?

CUPS is the work of the Devil. I never was able to use a printer while I was in my Linux phase despite reading all the manuals a thousand times and reconfiguring a thousand scripts. They desperately need an "it just works" printing system in *nix.

Success!

Myth is installed fine (and mysql etc.). I have yet to go through the setup process--I will go through that whole rigamarole tonight or tomorrow afternoon and hopefully test the box out on <i>Dr. Who</i> tomorrow night.

Question for macker and/or anyone else who has set up a myth box--how exactly does myth control the tuner box? I have seen people mentioning an IR remote, but the Hauppage 150 I bought did not come with a remote.

My Canon printer plugged and played in Fedora. Ner.

You either need an IR blaster or, if you're lucky and the settop box either has a firewire or RS232 port on the back a cable of some sorts to hook it up to your MythTV box.

Naturally, depending on the make of your cable box getting this all to work under MythTV is either going to be hard or very hard.

Before I do anything, I have to get the card to capture.

cat /dev/video0 > /tmp/foo.mpg results in an MPEG full of static. If I change the channel, I also can get black or grey.

Also, mplayer claims it is unable to play mpeg2, although xine can play it just fine. Not sure how to get xine to watch /dev/video0 yet.

So now I have mplayer displaying static from the card:
mplayer -vo x11 /dev/video0

Unfortunately, regardless of what channel I set the card to, it's just static :\
Googling for this problem reveals a few people on forums trying to get help, and nobody answering them. Goddammit.

It's an issue with the tuner input. Composite video/audio works fine.

Updates:

Recording from the cable set-top box with component video/audio - ok. The resolution seems weird...it looks like it's recording in widescreen as well (there are black bars top & bottom on the recording).

Second recording with component video/audio--audio was fucked up. Not sure what the deal is there, might need to do some more experimentation.

Third recording, with coaxial from the set-top box to the Hauppage card. Whoo! We get signal. Audio is fine, video is staticky but present.

Looking into these issues now.

The scheduler works (recorded blank air last night, thinking it was recording Robot Chicken, because I haven't yet hooked it up to anything).

If I cannot get the serial port working and before I get an IR blaster, I can still do scheduling with the box itself...I wonder how can I get myth to just record whatever is on? That might be a temporary solution.
